Metal Atelier Where others find inspiration in sunsets and nature, I find it in Motorhead songs.

Metal Atelier is a Berlin based jewelry company making one of a kind pieces, inspired by all things spiky, shiny, and nihilistic, with a sprinkling of animal print.

The Elsie is the cutest little new solitaire. A bit dainty, a bit rough around the edges, but perhaps the perfect addition to your stack.

A silver band with a 10k white gold bezel, 2 salt and pepper diamond accents, and a center Sri Lankan spinel. I have limited quantities of these spinels, if you are interested in one of these, reach out and we can make some magic happen 💫

The Arabella: A study in elegance and chaos. I spent a lot of research time in a book called "Victorian Comfort" for these rings. The title was rather tongue in cheek, in that many sections offered first what came before comfort (there was always something). We all know what corsets look like, and I learned more than needed about how organs shift. But I digress. This ring has nothing to do with organs shifting.

The Arabella features a blue marquis sapphire in an 18k yellow gold hand engraved bezel, with 6 salt and pepper diamond accents and and hand engraved and millgrain detail. Oh la la. Also, it is incredibly comfortable 😉

The gemstone mining in Sri Lanka is nearly all small scale artisanal and the use of heavy machinery is restricted or banned depending on the age of the mining permit. The extraction of dirt is done manually, processed with mostly hand tools, and then the land the mine was on has to be returned to its original state once the w**e is depleted.

I traded a few ci******es for a little parcel of low quality rough stones and was very excited that smoking finally benefitted me in some way after all these years. We had a cutter on the trip (stone faceter, not someone doing self harm), and he unfortunately rated none of the stones worthy of cutting. I have a little memento collecting dust on my desk that I am still trying to figure how to monetise.

Full story in the blog, link in bio.

1. Traded for a few smokes, later learned I was not the winner
2. Mine
3. Purchased for the miners, and a bottle for us. Could have gone much worse.
4. Mineshaft. Big hole, little Anna. I did not climb down.

As part of our journey, we had the opportunity to visit a traditional heat treating facility.

Most commercial grade sapphires are heated treated to improve the color. This can be done thru a controlled heating in a kiln, or by an old school blower who works with a pipe and charcoal. We met the latter, a man in a cement room with a pipe, charcoal, a stool, and not much else. But he was the best in the biz.

1. The man
2. Sapphires, before
3. The process, burying in charcoal
4. Sapphires, after

In January, I travelled to Sri Lanka on a stone buying and education trip. It has been my quest for some time to visit mines, better understand where my stones come from, and grasp the mine to retail process more closely.

I will be releasing a small collection of rings next week from this journey, but want to share some of the story first.

Full blog link in bio.

1. Stone buying. Reverse capitalism. You sit and stones are brought to you.
2. A few of these sapphires might be sitting in the atelier
3. Breakfast with a side of stone identification
4. These are definitely in the atelier
