Jeju Island 🇰🇷🚢
Taking a little “guide’s holiday” to explore the island with a colleague. Following the theme of Cruiseship Botanica, our journey was all about the greenery:

🌸 Camellia Hill – A floral paradise, even in the off-season.
🌳 Bonsai Garden – Noted the local favorites: Chinese Juniper, Yew, and Chinese Quince.
🍵 Tea Plantations – Endless green horizons and pure relaxation.

Jeju is famous for its tangerines 🍊, so tangerine ice cream was the perfect grand finale to a wonderful day. 🍦

Next stop: Ulsan! 👋

On-board Cruise Guide: Nagasaki ⚓️🚢🌵

A beautiful day in Nagasaki with a thoughtful touch. After Hiroshima, guests could choose their preferred way to spend the day.

I led the "Botanical & History" course:
📍 Dejima
📍Peace Park
📍 Glover Garden

Since our cruise ship is named Botanica, and our guests are all plant lovers, our tours are specially designed with a botanical focus! 🌳✨

Working alongside our on-board botanical expert was a highlight.
Exploring Glover Garden from a plant-centred perspective offered so many fresh insights.

It was a day of deep learning and beautiful greenery.

Next destination: South Korea! 🇰🇷🛳️

On-board Cruise Guide: Uwajima ⚓️

So happy to be back in Uwajima! I’ve been looking forward to visiting this beautiful city again.

Our day started at Doi Pearl. We learned about the delicate process of pearl farming right at the farm before heading to the shop. Everyone was absolutely mesmerized by the stunning luster of the pearls! ✨

Next, we visited Tensha-en Garden. Since we are traveling on the cruise ship Botanica, we have expert gardeners on board who shared deep insights into the local flora. 🌿 While the "climbing wisteria" (Nobori-fuji) that was in full bloom last time had already passed, the light purple wisteria and iris were breathtakingly beautiful. 💜

We also explored the Date Museum to dive into Uwajima’s rich history. One of our guests (a lady!) even tried on a samurai outfit!

To make the day even better, I finally got to meet Uwajima's adorable mascot, "Date Nyanyo," whom I missed on my last trip! We made sure to take a commemorative photo together. 🐱📸

We left Uwajima to the warm, spectacular send-off of Tairyo-bata (vibrant traditional flags for a big fishing catch).

I'll be back again soon, Uwajima!

Next stop: Nagasaki! 🚢💨

On-Board Cruise Guide

Exploring My Hometown: Hiroshima 🇯🇵✨

It was an honour to guide our guests through my roots.

📍 Peace Memorial Park & Museum

We started with a deep dive into history.
We offered the paper cranes folded by our guests, leaving behind a collective message of peace. It’s always moving to see the contrast between the city’s tragic past and its vibrant, modern present.

📍 Miyajima Adventure

We took a Zodiac boat from the ship to the island—the best way to feel the energy of the Seto Inland Sea! We visited:
* The floating Itsukushima Shrine.
* Daisho-in Temple, including the mystical Henjokutsu Cave (a “mini” 88-temple pilgrimage). Lucky for us, the island was peaceful and not too crowded!

🌙 An Evening to Remember

Dinner was served on the ship while docked, offering a front-row seat to Hiroshima’s beautiful skyline. A perfect end to an emotional and inspiring day.

Onwards to Uwajima next!
Stay tuned for more from one of my favorite hidden gems. ⚓️

Cruise Ship Shore Excursion – Takamatsu Port

This journey was a special one—exploring with guests who love gardening, including professional gardeners and botanists.

We began in the Kinashi Bonsai District, a place I had visited before, one that gently brought back memories of my late father.

At Nakanishi Chinshō-en, we listened to an insightful explanation from the wife of the fifth-generation owner.
Questions flowed continuously—everyone’s deep curiosity and passion for plants was truly inspiring.

And of course, it became a valuable learning experience for me as well. The world of bonsai is incredibly profound.

Next, we visited Ritsurin Garden.

To my surprise, the cicadas were already singing!

We admired the beautifully sculpted pine trees and fully immersed ourselves in the elegance of a traditional Japanese garden.
The expert guidance here was absolutely brilliant✨

There was a huge amount of pine pollen in the air—I felt grateful not to have any allergies!

We also stopped by to view the Seto Ohashi Bridge.

As the ship departed, we were treated to a powerful performance by the Takamatsu Teppo-tai, who demonstrated matchlock gun firing using Edo-period gunpowder.

It was spectacular.

Thank you, Takamatsu—I’ll be back again.

Next stop: my hometown, Hiroshima.

Returned to Uno Port once again! 🤣

Following the heavy rains during our previous trip to Korakuen and Kurashiki, we were fortunate to have ideal, overcast conditions today.

I am currently accompanying a botanical expert on a tour of gardens and bonsai nurseries. Hearing their specialized insights offers a unique perspective that is quite different from a standard guided tour.

Onward to Takamatsu. 🚢

Exploring the Soul of Amami Oshima 🌿✨

A wonderful day of nature and culture on one of my favorite islands!

📍 Oshima Tsumugi Village Witnessing the incredible craftsmanship of Oshima Tsumugi silk. This industry is a vital pillar of the island’s heritage and economy. The dedication in every thread is breathtaking.

📍 Amami Nature Observation Forest A deep dive into the wild with an expert nature guide. 🥾

* Ruddy Kingfisher: We heard its distinct call echoing through the trees—a sure sign of its presence!
* Lidth’s Jay: Lucky enough to spot one coming down for a bath.
* Survival in the Wild: Saw Amami Green Frog eggs hanging from branches—a smart trick to avoid the Amami Sword-tailed Newts waiting below.
*
The warmth of the local people stayed with us until the very end, as they danced on the pier to see us off. Thank you, Amami!

Next destination: Yakushima... 🌊🚢

クルーズ船のオンボードガイドが始まりました。

まずは石垣島から

好天に恵まれ、風は強かったものの美しい風景を楽しむことができました。

1日シーデイを挟んで、次は奄美大島です。

My journey as an onboard cruise guide has officially begun! 🚢

Our first stop was Ishigaki Island. We were blessed with beautiful weather—it was a bit windy, but the scenery was absolutely breathtaking!

After a relaxing day at sea, our next destination is Amami Oshima. Can’t wait!

Final day in Tokyo! 🇯🇵✨

Our morning started beautifully with a clear view of Mt. Fuji from the hotel. However, by the time we reached the top of Tokyo Skytree, she had gone shy and hid behind the clouds! ☁️

While we couldn’t see her peak, the panoramic view of the city was still breathtaking, and the guests thoroughly enjoyed it. (I must admit, the elevator queue was truly insane! 😅)

Next, we explored Asakusa, visiting the Kaminarimon Gate and Senso-ji Temple. The most heartwarming moment was seeing a parent and child in Kimonos having a playful "chanbara" sword fight. ⚔️👘

To conclude our incredible Tokyo tour, we boarded a Dinner Cruise on Tokyo Bay. Good food, great drinks, and the glittering night skyline made for a perfect finale. 🥂🌃

This group was genuinely special—a wonderful team with a great sense of humor. The group representative gave a speech that absolutely moved me to tears. 🥹

Before we left the cruise ship, we all exchanged big hugs and shared our heartfelt thanks. I’m certain we’ll stay connected through our messaging group!

Thank you all for such a wonderful time. 🙏

Every tour is a learning experience, and I have my own reflections from this one. But ending with so many smiles and genuine hugs makes it all worthwhile.

Tomorrow, a new adventure begins! Taking everything I learned to make the next tour even better. Ready for my next Onboard Cruise Guide assignment! Let’s do this! 💪🚢

Lake Ashi in the Mist 🌫️

We were all looking forward to seeing Mt. Fuji this day, but the day started with rain. Even after the rain stopped, the mist remained so thick that we couldn’t even see our sightseeing boat entering the pier!

By the time we arrived at Hakone Shrine, the fog began to lift slightly, revealing the iconic “Torii” gate standing elegantly in the water. ⛩️

We hoped for a grand view of Mt. Fuji from the summit of Mt. Komagatake, but the mountain remained hidden... until a magical moment on the ropeway back down! For just a split second, the very peak of Mt. Fuji peeked through the clouds.

It seems Mt. Fuji was feeling a bit “shy” today, though some of our guests were lucky enough to catch a beautiful view from their Fuji-side hotel rooms! 🏔️✨

Our tour bus headed to the bright lights of Tokyo. 🗼

A day of tradition and joy in Kyoto. 🇯🇵

In addition to a serene tea ceremony experience, we held an origami workshop. Guests selected their preferred design, with the intricate, multi-layered spinning top being the clear favorite. The atmosphere was electric when everyone’s tops began to spin! 🌀✨

Despite the rain, our visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha was a beautiful experience.

Thank you to everyone for making it such a memorable day! ⛩️🙏

From Osaka to Okayama 🌸

We visited Korakuen Garden and Kurashiki, then continued by bus to Hiroshima.

With cherry blossom season and a Sunday overlapping, Okayama was quite crowded—but the journey from Okayama to Hiroshima went much smoother than expected, which was a relief.

There are always a few things to reflect on, but I’m truly grateful for a joyful and fulfilling day.
