Key step to drill a borehole

💦 Hydrogeological survey( site assessment), this is aimed at identifying the best spot to locate an aquifer.

💦 A qualified hydrogeologist analyzes the ground to determine the depth, expected water amount and geological structures.

Borehole drilling is a major long term investment, yet many projects fail due to avoidable technical and planning mistakes.

Common mistakes range from skipping preliminary scientific surveys to using poor quality materials, leading to dry holes, low yields, or contaminated water.

To avoid mistakes:

1. prioritize site selection: conduct a hydrogeological survey and to locate the best aquifer and avoid drilling in random spots. keep the borehole far from contaminants like septic tanks.

2. use quality materials: ensure the contractors uses heavy duty, high quality casings and screens to avoid premature casing collapse.

3. supervise the drilling: be present or have a trusted representative on-site to verify the exact drilling depth and number of casing used.

4. accurate pump sizing: never buy pump before the pump testing reports are out. mis-sized pumps (too big, too small) lead to frequent breakdown and, or inefficient water supply.

5. comply with regulations: obtain necessary legal permits and environmental approval to avoid fines and closures.

6. clean and develop the borehole: proper cleaning removes debris and ensures high water yields.

Borehole drilling should be terminated based on combined geological findings

1. Reaching the target depth

2. sufficient yield

3. when bedrock is reached

4. excessive cost/ non productive depth

5. water quality decline

don't get messed up!!!!

Borehole Development: This is the crucial post drilling process of cleaning, surging and flushing a new well to remove drilling fluids, silts and fine particles from the surrounding aquifers.

💦 it increases permiability

💦 it improves water quality

💦 it maximizes yield / long-term performance by stabilizing the gravel pack and filtration materials.

Borehole casing is a critical protective pipes, typically made of steel or upvc inserted into a drilled well to maintain structural integrity, prevent collapse and block contaminants.

It keeps out sediments and isolates aquifers, ensuring long-term well stability and water purity

Common types include high strength steel for deep wells and corrosion resistant upvc for shallow wells.

Ok...... let's learn together

Effects sinking boreholes too close to each other ( over drilling)

1. Reduced water yield/ well interference: when two or more boreholes tap into the same aquifer at a close distance, they compete for the same ground water............................. . .. to be continued
