From Gewda to Glory ✨

Not every sapphire begins its journey in perfection.
Gewda sapphires are a powerful reminder that true beauty is often hidden beneath the surface.

In their natural state, Gewda sapphires appear milky, cloudy, or muted in color due to dense silk inclusions. To the untrained eye, they may seem ordinary but to educated gem professionals, they represent extraordinary potential.

Through controlled heat treatment, these internal silk structures dissolve, revealing:
• Stronger saturation
• Improved transparency
• Richer, cleaner blue tones
• Enhanced brilliance and value

This transformation is permanent, stable, and globally accepted in the gemstone trade when performed correctly making heated Gewda sapphires a cornerstone of the modern sapphire market.

At Travel With Gems, we believe education builds trust.
We share not just stones but knowledge, origin, and process.
Because informed buyers create stronger markets and lasting relationships.

From rough in the hand to fire in the furnace
this is where science meets nature, and experience meets opportunity.

💎 For gem merchants: Know the potential.
💎 For collectors: Understand the journey.
💎 For enthusiasts: Learn the difference.

💎 1. What is a Star Sapphire?

A star sapphire is a special type of sapphire (a precious gemstone made from corundum) that displays a star-like optical effect known as asterism.
• The “star” you see is created by needle-like inclusions (usually rutile) arranged in intersecting directions within the stone.
• When light strikes the surface just right, it reflects as a sharp star pattern, often featuring six rays. This effect is quite rare, significantly enhancing the gem’s beauty and value.

🌍 2. Sri Lanka’s Gem Heritage
Sri Lanka, especially the Ratnapura area (literally the “City of Gems”), is famous for high-quality sapphires, including various star sapphires in colors like blue, black, purple, and more.

💥 3. The Recent “Star of Pure Land” Find
In early January 2026, Sri Lanka revealed a massive purple star sapphire thought to be the largest of its kind ever documented:
• Weight: ~3,563 carats (huge for a gemstone).
• Name: “Star of Pure Land”.
• Color: Purple (rare for star sapphires).
• Asterism: Distinct six-rayed star.
• Value: Estimated between $300 million and $400 million by international valuers.
• Discovered in 2023 near Rathnapura and identified later for its exceptional quality.
• It has been polished and is being showcased, while the owners remain anonymous.

This gemstone has attracted worldwide attention due to its size, quality, and the scarcity of purple star sapphires.

🧠 4. Why Such Sapphires Are Valuable
Several factors contribute to the value of star sapphires:
🔹 Asterism quality: Clear, centered stars are the most sought after.
🔹 Size: Larger stones (especially those with hundreds or thousands of carats) are extremely rare.
🔹 Color: Strong, rich hues (especially rare ones like purple) enhance desirability.
🔹 Transparency & clarity: Although star sapphires are typically opaque to translucent, better clarity increases value.
🔹 Origin & certification: Stones from Sri Lanka with official gemological certification (like GIA or other labs) tend to command higher prices.
