It’s a high-stakes guessing game every single time a stone touches the cutting wheel.

In this clip, Alex opens up about the absolute worst financial nightmare in our industry: losing the yield game.

When you buy a premium piece of rough sapphire, you are paying a massive price tag based on the raw weight. You calculate the proportions, estimate the final faceted size, and hand it to the master cutter.

But to get the perfect symmetry, correct angles, and ideal color depth, you have to shave away the rough. If the shape of the rough forces you to cut deeper than expected just to achieve proper brilliance, your target carat weight vanishes—and with it, your entire profit margin.

Watch Alex explain the brutal reality of miscalculating a rough stone.

A perfect circle of pure, unheated fire.

Finding an unheated Ceylon sapphire with a master-level round brilliant cut is incredibly rare. Why? Because cutting a perfect round requires wasting a massive amount of the original rough gemstone. Gem cutters rarely do it unless the stone deserves it—and this one absolutely did.

Boasting a striking vivid blue saturation and immaculate symmetry, it faces up beautifully at 6.60mm. The perfect centerpiece for a generational engagement ring.

Weight: 1.31 ct

Dimensions: 6.60 x 6.60 x 3.98 mm

Treatment: Unheated / Completely Natural

There’s a reason you don’t see massive, planet-scarring open pits in Sri Lanka. Gems are a legacy here, and preserving the land is just as important as unearthing its treasures.

In this snippet, Senel breaks down the two primary mining methods and why one completely dominates the island:

1. Artisanal Mining (The backbone): Small-scale, highly regulated, and deeply traditional. Hand-dug vertical shafts use local timber and fern leaves for support to reach the illam (gem-bearing gravel). It’s low-impact, uses no toxic chemicals, and by law, the land must be fully restored—often back into functioning rice paddies—once mining concludes.

2. Industrial Mining (The exception): Heavy machinery and large-scale mechanical operations. While efficient, the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) strictly limits industrial mining to protect Sri Lanka’s vulnerable water tables, rich agricultural sectors, and community livelihoods.

At Zenva Gems, we are proud to support the artisanal ecosystem. It keeps the wealth in local communities and protects the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

Not all gem markets in Sri Lanka are created equal. If you want to source like a pro, you have to know where to go.

Our founder, Vishwa, breaks down the core focus of the country's four most iconic gem hubs:

Rathnapura – The undisputed capital. The ultimate hub for everything from fresh rough stones straight out of the pits to beautifully faceted gems.

Beruwala (Chinafort) – The global hotspot for trading, heat treatment, and precision cutting—especially heavily focused on faceted, commercial, and high-end export stones.

Heraniyawaka (Idangoda) – A rapid morning market (7:30 AM - 10:30 AM) famed primarily for its vibrant, raw, unheated rough gemstone trading.

Nivithigala – Deep in the mining heartland, this is where you go to find high-quality rough sapphires directly from local miners before they hit the big towns.

At Zenva Gems, we bridge the gap between these local mine-level markets and international collectors. Which market would you want to visit first?
