Last week, I had the opportunity to be part of a batik block workshop taught by a batik block Adiguru (master craftsman), Pok Ghani, that was a truly priceless and humbling experience.

Although the tools are similar to jewellery-making; the techniques are quite different and you have to think of how the design is going to translate on fabric or your canvas of choice, and whether all the components will be able to withstand the heat and not breaking apart when dipped in hot wax for stamping.

Despite being familiar with working with brass, I also struggled with soldering at the beginning because we were using tin and not silver solder like I'm used to - which melts almost immediately when introduced to heat and harder to control the flow. I would say that making batik block is harder than making jewellery, as a beginner!

Humbled by these new techniques and materials, I'm very grateful for the guidance and knowledge-sharing by my teacher and all the teaching assistants that allowed me to be able to finish my first batik block just in time for the closing ceremony - the last one to do so ha ha.

This whole week was of course made more fun and less nerve-wracking by having as table partner with me in the workshop - who kept encouraging and keeping me calm-ish (hahaha) throughout the process, so thank you Muizz!

OPEN FOR CUSTOM ORDERS ✨

I spent the last week of 2025 making a pair of rings for and I using the Yemeni aqeeq stones that I recently acquired from my teacher.

After 4 months of doing my apprenticeship learning and making very traditional pieces, I thought of breaking away from it for a bit during my stone setting lesson. Instead of the usual fine polished look, I crafted the pieces with a raw and matte finish that’s more my style. It made me realize that it’s been years since I have made something like this.

So after much contemplation and although I’m still exploring my visual language with all the new skills that I’m learning, I have decided to start taking custom orders again starting with these rings to support my practice.

The rings are carved in wax before being cast in fine silver and can be customized for you following similar designs with different stones and finishes.
