Among the Touareg, silversmithing is a learned craft, passed down through generations within families of artisans. Skills are not taught quickly or formally, but absorbed over years by watching, assisting, repeating, and refining. Over time, technique becomes instinct.

Historically, silver was obtained through trade routes that crossed the Sahara, linking West Africa, North Africa, and the Mediterranean world. Silver was scarce and valuable; old coins and traded silver were melted down so material could be reused, reshaped, and adapted, turning objects of exchange into personal adornment that could be carried and worn.

At Aza Laye, this heritage forms the starting point. Our pieces are not just jewelry; they carry stories across cultures, generations, and borders.
