As I begin to write out ideas for the next book, I feel how this series of poem picture books is writing me!
Ideas come flying and I grab scraps of envelopes, pieces of paper and jot them down. To transport them into my journal. Then, like with the other books, I'll print them out large and talk through them with our workshops. We see what else emerges to shape them and let them linger with the place they come from.
This series feels like it is writing my journey of connection and becoming, being of this place, Aotearoa NZ. Only recently I'm felt able to say "I am Māori". For so long I felt I wasn't enough, only a part, not connected, not anchored, not speaking reo.
The legacy of this story is a river running through my body. How generations have been affected through language loss. But all rivers flow to the sea and can be returned.
The story is mine. As well as everyone's. All at the same time.
