This piece reflects on sustainability from an ambiguous and critical perspective. Gold, historically associated with eternity, purity, and power, is also the result of extractive processes that are deeply aggressive toward both the land and the communities connected to mining. In contrast, the piece proposes a symbolic displacement: instead of starting from a solid noble metal, it uses a plastic core — the quintessential contemporary residue — coated with a layer of gold plating that acts here as a skin: a surface of legitimization that transforms our perception of the object and automatically activates ideas of luxury, permanence, and desire.

The piece does not propose an idealized solution to sustainability, but rather a reflection on its contradictions.

The brooch thus functions as a hybrid body that condenses some of the paradoxes of contemporary jewelry: a discipline historically linked to luxury and extraction, yet one that today seeks to critically rethink its relationship with materials and their value.

In this exhibition, weseek inspiration from a fundamental material injewellery—gold—to question the use andextraction of precious materials, the recyclingpractices that have marked the history ofjewellery (often involving the destruction of manypieces), and the very notion of preciousness incontemporary jewellery. We also explore thesacred, symbolic, artistic, historical, andeconomic dimensions of materials, jewellery, andgold in particular, as a metaphor for jewelleryitself and its contradictions. Sakaiensis | Between the Precious and the waste

An imagined coexistence between the natural and mineral worlds, between the precious and the waste .

Recycled PET plastic, electroformed copper, patina, and gold-plated roots come together in a hybrid organic form, where what we consider waste is transformed into material for a new cycle.
