Today's prompt is Spirit, and I would like to talk about Celebrían.
One of the many reasons I love Tolkien's work is the way he approaches themes of trauma and invisible scars that are left for many years after one's body has healed. He knew firsthand the impact that surviving war causes to one's soul, and he knew that sometimes even the strongest spirits get broken if they have endured too much. Sometimes both hröa - the body, and fëa - the spirit, can be healed, like Èowyn's did, and go on to build a new life where shadow has passed. But sometimes one has given everything they've had, like Frodo, and it's not for the lack of spirit that they cannot fully return to themselves, but for carrying the burden that was too great. The peace of the Undying lands, a place unmarred by the shadow, becomes their solace.
Celebrían, daughter of Galadriel and mother of Arwen, was among those who endured too much. She survived being captured by orcs, but her spirit could never fully recover in the Middle-Earth, even at Elrond's halls of healing.
She had to leave for Valinor for a chance of peace, loath though she was to leave her family behind.
I always imagined her wandering the realm of Irmo and Estë, her fëa slowly healing, hoping for a reunion with those she loved.
