Cubewerkz Cubewerkz – Singapore’s premier speedcubing academy and puzzle retailer, training world-class cubers and supporting international competitions.

Cubewerkz, founded in 2012 by David Ang, is Singapore’s leading speedcubing academy, puzzle retailer, and competition organizer. Cubewerkz has sponsored the Singapore Championship since 2013 and supported competitions across Southeast Asia. The company has organized landmark events such as the Singapore Kempinski Rubik’s 50th Anniversary Open, Singapore Newcomers Competitions 2024 & 2025, and was a co-organizer of the SpeedCubing segment at the Asia MindSport Festival 2025, promoting cubing to beginners and seasoned competitors alike. Through its Cubing Academy, Cubewerkz has trained over 1,000 students, offering lessons for all ages and skill levels. Programs focus on building speed, problem-solving, and confidence with puzzles ranging from 3x3 cubes to Pyraminx and beyond. With a mission to promote speedcubing, STEM learning, and puzzle culture, Cubewerkz also offers custom puzzles, cubing mats, and apparel, inspiring cubers across Singapore and the region.

Held on 17 October at the Capitol Kempinski Hotel, it was a memorable day filled with friendly competition and a shared passion for the Rubik’s Cube.

A colourful puzzle invented by Hungarian professor Ernő Rubik has grown into a global phenomenon, bringing people from different cultures and backgrounds together. This event was a wonderful reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a little cube to connect us all. 🌍❤️

He Wasn’t the Fastest. He Just Kept Going.

In 1983, a 61-year-old Australian potato farmer named Cliff Young entered an 875 km ultramarathon from Sydney to Melbourne.

He arrived at the start line in overalls and work boots. The other competitors were experienced ultramarathon runners, many decades younger than him.

Nobody expected him to win.

The conventional strategy was simple: run during the day, then stop and sleep for about 5–6 hours each night.

Cliff initially followed the same plan.

On the first night, he went to sleep expecting his crew to wake him at around 5:30 a.m.

But there was a mistake.

His alarm went off at 2:30 a.m.

Instead of going back to sleep, Cliff got up and started running.

While the other runners were still sleeping, he was moving.

And he kept moving.

His running style was an unusual, slow shuffle. He wasn’t the fastest runner on the course. But his pace was sustainable, and he gradually built an enormous advantage.

There were plenty of moments when things could have gone wrong. At one point he even went about a kilometre in the wrong direction. Later, exhaustion and sleep deprivation became so severe that he was barely aware of what was happening around him.

Yet he kept going.

After 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes, Cliff Young crossed the finish line.

He won the race by about 10 hours and smashed the previous record by almost two days.

What fascinates me about this story isn’t simply that a 61-year-old beat much younger elite runners.

It’s the strategy.

The other runners were optimising for speed.

Cliff was, almost accidentally, optimising for continuous progress.

A faster pace doesn’t matter if you have to keep stopping.

Sometimes the person who looks slowest is actually moving forward the longest.

This applies far beyond running.

In business, learning, fitness, and life, we often admire speed — how quickly someone grows, learns, builds or achieves.

But there is another question that is just as important:

Can you keep going?

You don’t always have to be the fastest.

You just have to keep moving.

Consistency over speed. Progress over perfection.

One thing cubing has taught me is that competition reveals character.

We celebrate winners, records, and elite performances. Yet for every winner, there are many others who trained just as hard but fell short on that day.

Winning is easy to celebrate. The harder question is how we respond to defeat.

Can we be genuinely happy for someone else’s success? Can we learn instead of making excuses? Can we return stronger without losing respect for others?

Perhaps the greatest achievement in cubing isn’t just becoming faster, but becoming a better competitor, teammate, and person along the way.

Welcoming the newest member of Team Cubewerkz — Phumiphat Rungvichaniwat () 🇹🇭

Former Thailand Pyraminx National Record holder and currently ranked Thailand NR3, Phumiphat continues to impress with his official 3x3 average now dipping below sub-8 seconds 🔥

Beyond competition, he is also well known in the Thai cubing community for his great personality, active involvement as an organizer, and his photography work at competitions. His current Sum of Ranks stands at Thailand NR5, showing his consistency across multiple events.
