SB2SK: Subaru WRX

“Can the WRX break the dominance of the hot hatches such as R5 Turbo, Swift GTi and Civic VTi at our car park rallies?” - wondered the management of Motor Image (namely former GM Steven Yeong and former Sales Manager David Ling).
I said Yes. And I promptly became the first to register a WRX in Singapore and to compete in car park rallies, sprints and slaloms. In addition, i bought the tiny RX-R to compete in the autotest series.
Together with the strong support from Stamford Tyres and Espace Service Centre, both cars proved to be streets ahead of the competition. No prize for guessing who became the 1994 Supergrade Champion.

SB2SK: Opel Wins

Douglas Chua and I drove the Vectra 1.6S to an outright victory in the 1992 Shell Economy Rally. In fact, we could have won it the year before. We were among the top contenders but a last-minute infringement ruled me out of the rally.
My gratitude to Derek McCully (the top man in General Motors, Singapore office) for inviting me to join Team Opel.

SB2SK: Surprising Skoda

What a way to begin the 90’s! I became a works driver, competing in a factory prepared Skoda Group A rally car.
Powered by a rather basic 1.3L engine, the Skoda Favorit wasn’t exceptionally quick. But its chassis was the toughest that I had driven thus far. Unfortunately, over exuberance put paid to my campaign in 1990 Rally of Malaysia.
Subsequently, I used the same car for 1990 Rally of Singapore and Malaysia Rally Championship. Although I didn’t pick up any significant win with the Favorit, I will never forget the support and the camaraderie with the team from 600 Motors. Overall, this was the beginning of a transitional period for greater things to come.

SB2SK: Becoming Exklusiv

In 1985, I joined Exklusiv Auto as a product manager for Motul oils. The company’s main business was the distribution of Renault cars. To avoid conflict of interest, I voluntarily relinquished my position in Mazda camp and switched to Renault.
My ex-boss Peter Kwee entrusted me a R11 Turbo to participate in the inaugural race at Pasir Gudang. It was not only my first competition with a force-induction engine but also my first attempt in a circuit race. I gained positions during the race and was a top contender for a class win till a worn clutch ended my race prematurely.
We subsequently entered the car for autocross but was denied any win by a blown head gasket. However, the greatest disappointment must be my bogey run during the first ever Tour De Singapour. I surrendered a huge lead and was relegated to 3rd overall.
However, I paid off the confidence that Peter placed in me by teaming up with Douglas Chua in 1989. We drove splendidly to finish 1st Overall in Tour de Singapore.

SB2SK: Generosity of Asia Motors

Before car park rallies, the competitive events every year were autotest championship, autocross championship, economy rally, sprints and slaloms. Hence, there was literally an event every month in 1983 and 1984.
As a young man who just discovered the joy of motor sport, I wouldn’t want to miss any event. I had the time but not the money.
The sponsorship and support from Asia Motors were like God sent. They registered a brand-new Mazda 323 1.5HB for me to compete in 1983 and subsequently I was given the opportunity to drive the Mazda 323GT. Come to think of it. I couldn’t ask for a better sponsor. I was only a “small boy” waiting for NS enlistment. They even supported my participation in Malaysia rallies and when I got married in 1985, they provided me with bridal cars.

SB2SK: Strike Gold with MAZDA

Dr Winston Lee and William Lyou were vying to win the 1982 Pesta Sukan Autotest. They were driving Mazda 323 1.5HB and Nissan Sunny 1.5 respectively. Both were very tensed and running neck to neck. Unfortunately (perhaps fortunately for me), they hit the pylons towards the end of the first stage. They were each penalised 10 seconds.

Their errors suddenly trusted me into the lead with my less powerful Mazda 323 1.3NB. I drove my heart out for the next 3 stages, maintaining the advantage and beat both contenders by a small margin. It was a truly memorable result for that was my first OUTRIGHT VICTORY. The next morning, Asia Motors (distributor for Mazda cars during that period) called to congratulate me They offered me something that i had been hoping for i.e. a sponsored driver under their banner. I was only 19 then and that was truly a golden opportunity 🤩

SB2SK: Dad bought me a “Suzie”

In 1981, not long after I got my licence, my dad bought me a brand-new 550cc Suzuki SS40. No, it wasn’t a bike but a rather slow car. However, it didn’t deter me from entering my first competition. Fortunately, my result was so encouraging that the agent Champion Motors took notice of me and rendered assistance for subsequent events!

Co-driven with Rupert Boey, our Suzuki won the most number of awards for 1982 Shell Economy Rally namely a) 1st in Class; b) Novice Champion; and c) 3rd Overall. After the win, Champion Motors offered me their more powerful 800cc Suzuki SS80 to compete in various events including autotest and autocross. That marked the beginning of a sponsored drive in my motorsport career.

SB2SK: Preface / Introduction

My life has many facets. I’m a watch distributor and I love driving. I attained my licence on my first attempt, before I turned 18. Within a year, I was competing in the ranks of racing drivers from Singapore Motor Sport Club (now known as Motor Sports Singapore). They called me “small boy”.

I took part in different forms of competition and became a top Autotest driver, Slalom Champ, as well as Economy Rally and Car Park Rally champion. To date, I remain the only Singaporean to have competed in World Rally Championship events. For my accomplishments, I was labelled as the “Speed King” in a article by The Straits Times dated 17 Oct 2020 [see image attached herewith]

In addition, I volunteered for trackside work, served in the (motorsport) committee in various capacities and presided over the association for two separate terms. The sport has given me the strength to deal with failures, disappointments and members from various backgrounds.

In my motorsport journey, I have represented Singapore at the highest level and been honoured to play a unifying role in the motorsport community. I even found time to promote road safety for our future generation. The photos in this book are some of the highlights of my motorsport career. May this story of how a “small boy” became a “Speed King” inspire you. Enjoy.

SB2SK: Dynah

This book is dedicated to Dynah Chang Lee Tjan

My #3 sister Dynah was a tall girl with beautiful natural facial features. I remember seeing her becoming an accomplished model through the 70’s till early 80's. She was the “face” for product and corporate such as Sony and POSB respectively.

Subsequently, Dynah paid forward to the industry and the modelling agency that groomed her. She established a name for herself in talent spotting, recruiting and providing mentorship for budding models. Her spirit of "giving back" inspired me to make meaningful contributions towards the motorsport community.

Dynah was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly after her 70th birthday and was called Home on 27 March 2025 🌈
