The Alessandro Giuliani Violin Competition was founded in 2019 as an initiative by Alessandro Giuliani Violin to give young performers a platform to compete and perform on a Global Stage.

JURY ANNOUNCEMENT:

Alessandro Giuliani Violin Competition is honoured to welcome back the Concert Master of Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Greek violinist Omiros Yavroumis as the third and final jury for the AGVC 2026 Asia Round Finals. Omiros also sat on the jury for the 2019 Thailand Round and we are thrilled to have him complete the Jury together with Gabriel and Kanin.

Omiros Yavroumis graduated in 2002 from the Royal Academy of Music in London, with the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, under Professor Mateja Marinkovic. He has also attended master classes and taken violin lessons with Yehudi Menuhin, Maxim Vengerov, Ruggiero Ricci, Zakhar Bron, Leonidas Kavakos, Ivry Gitlis, etc., and has won numerous awards in solo and chamber music competitions, both in Greece and abroad.

He has appeared as soloist with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jelenia Gora Philharmonic, the Filharmonia Dolnoslaska, the State Orchestra of Athens, the City of Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra, the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra, etc. He has also appeared as soloist and has taken part in chamber music groups and orchestras in many countries (USA, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, France and Italy), under famous conductors such as Sir Colin Davies, Sir Charles Mackerras, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Naeme Yarvi, Kent Nagano, Michael Tilson Thomas etc., in venues including the Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall and Royal Opera House in London, Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg etc.

In 2002, Omiros was appointed Concertmaster of the City of Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra in Greece and in 2008 he was appointed violin professor at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. Pupils of Omiros Yavroumis have won prizes in national and international competitions and gained places at European and American Music Academies. Since December 2016, Omiros has been the Concertmaster of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and violin professor at the College of Music in Mahidol University.

JURY ANNOUNCEMENT:

Alessandro Giuliani Violin Competition is honoured to welcome back renown Thai violinist Kanin Udommana as one of the jury for the AGVC 2026 Asia Round Finals. Kanin also sat on the jury for the 2019 ASEAN Round and we are thrilled to have him back sitting on the jury with Gabriel!

Kanin started learning piano and music fundamentals at a tender age of 4 and later began his violin lessons with Rear Admiral Veeraphan Vawklang at Bangkok Symphony Music school (BSS).

From 1997-2003 he was a member of Thai Youth Orchestra and has been a member of Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO) since 2002. He was inducted the youngest member at that time. Kanin currently sits as Co-Principal 2nd Violin for the orchestra.

In 2003, Kanin was awarded a scholarship from HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Classical Music Fund. After he graduated from Bangkok Christian College, Kanin continued his music studies at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, one of the oldest and the top music Universities in Europe. As the first Thai student there, Kanin has studied with Prof. Reiner Küchl, Concertmaster of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Wolfgang David an internationally known Austrian violinist and Prof.Jela Spitkova. Thereafter he pursued further studies in Master Degree Violin Performance at Music Academy Banska Bytrisca in Slovakia with Prof.Jela Spitkova and Viola Chamber music at University for music and performing arts Graz (KUG) with Prof.Stephan Goerner (Carmina Quartet).

Kanin has been selected to attend many master classes with famous violinists and performed often together with World-class musicians such as Midori Goto, Alberto Lysy, Joshua Bell, Boris Belkin, Roman Nodel, Jose Carreras, Mikhail Pletnev, Su-mi Jo etc. In 2006, he has served as principal second violin of the Niederösterreich Jugendorchestra and has performed under many orchestras in Austria such as Webern Symphony Orchestra, Recreation Graz, Sinfonietta Baden, Korean-Austrian Philharmonic Orchestra etc. In 2016, Kanin and his Quartet was invited to perform in International Guitar Week Graz.

In 2018 Kanin was chosen by BMW Thailand to be in the BMW Stories campaign and worked with Maestro Zubin Mehta.

JURY ANNOUNCEMENT:

Alessandro Giuliani Violin Competition is honoured to welcome back violinist Gabriel Lee from Singapore as one of the jury for the AGVC 2026 Asia Round Finals. Gabriel also sat on the jury for the 2019 ASEAN Round and we are thrilled to have him back!

Gabriel's multifaceted career spans compelling performances, education, and entrepreneurship. Equally at home on both baroque and modern violins, his playing has been praised for its “breathtaking intensity” and “a passion and concentration that was hard to surpass” (The Straits Times).

He has appeared as a soloist across the United States, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar, collaborating with ensembles such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Red Dot Baroque, and Bachfest Malaysia. A dedicated educator, Gabriel teaches at the YST Conservatory of Music and the School of the Arts (SOTA), and coaches young musicians whose achievements include prizes at international competitions and admission to leading conservatories worldwide.

Gabriel has conducted masterclasses and coached ensembles across Singapore, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia, and regularly serves as an adjudicator for local and international competitions, as well as NAFA bachelor’s and master’s level strings examinations under the Royal College of Music (RCM) programme. He is also a member of advisory boards including the ABRSM Music Education Advisory Committee.

As a scholar, he has published and presented research at renowned international conferences and academic journals. His achievements have been recognised with awards and scholarships including the JC Van Hulsteyn Award in Violin and the Paul Abisheganaden Grant for Artistic Excellence. He holds master’s degrees in Violin Performance and Baroque Violin Performance from the Peabody Conservatory and graduated as valedictorian from the YST Conservatory of Music.

We are happy to announce that the Finals of the Alessandro Giuliani Violin Competition will be held on 22/3/20 in Singapore.

The 9 winners from the ASEAN round held on 31/8/19 as well as the 10 winners from the Thailand Round 2019 will be joined by the winners of the Singapore round that will be held on 20/3/19. Finalists and Parents of Finalists will hear from us directly with the details of the Finals by the end of this week.

We apologize for the delays along the way due to company restructuring and are glad to announce that everything is back on track. Thank you for the support all of you have shown thus far and we hope to see all of you soon!

Miti Wisuthumporn 1st Principle Viola at Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra

Miti started learning the violin when he was 14 and switched to the viola at the age of 15. During that time, he has had a chance to study with Prof. Choochart Pitaksakorn, National artist. From 2004 to 2008, he received a full-scholarship to study at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore under the tutelage of Mr. Jiri Heger. Thereafter he was given a scholarship from Carnegie Mellon University to do his Masters in viola performance program with distinguished American violists–Toby Appel in Pittsburgh. In 2010, he completed the Master of Music in at the Carnegie Mellon University. Miti is currently studying with Prof. Matthias Maurer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria.

Miti has taken part in many music activities and competitions at the local and national level, and won prizes including the silver medal in the 2001 Thai Youth Music Competition. He has served as principal violist for the orchestras of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, guest-principal violist of Siam Philharmonic, and the Galyani Institute Orchestra. Miti has performed at major venues internationally, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington DC and Musikverein in Austria. He was a viola member of Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Pennsylvania. Miti is also an occasional substitute violist for the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, and Capella Calliope, Austria.

In 2006 he performed at the state banquet hosted in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England, who was in Singapore for a state visit, as a member of the Conservatory String Quartet. He was a member of Carnegie Mellon String Sextet to perform for an inauguration on a post-concert series on the stage at Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh in 2009.

Introducing our Judges for Thailand Live Round

Marcin Szawelski, Head of Strings Department at College of Music, Mahidol University

a native of Gdansk, Poland, started his musical education at the age of 7 with Andrzej Filar. He continued in Liceum Muzyczne im. F. Nowowiejskiego in Gdansk where in 1999 he earned Diploma in Cello performance. Then he graduated with Master of Arts diploma (2005) from Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk where he studied cello performance, chamber music and music pedagogy under professors: Krzysztof Sperski, Anna Prabucka-Firlej and Tadeusz Samerek.

During his musical studies (1988-2005) Marcin participated in several masterclasses with renowned cellists like Stefan Popov, Maria Tchaikovska, Peter Leisegang, Roman Jablonski and earned numerous awards at cello and chamber music competitions. Among others:

1992 1st prize in Northern Poland Competition for Cellists in Malbork
1995 2nd prize in Competition for Young Musicians in Wloszakowice
1997 3rd prize in Chamber Music Competition in Gdansk
1999 1st prize in Chamber Music Competition in Gdansk
1999 4th prize in National Competition for Chamber Ensembles in Wroclaw, Poland
Since 2006 Marcin enjoys his career as a cellist in Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, currently as a cello group co-principal and as a cello and chamber music instructor at the College of Music, Mahidol University in Thailand.

Marcin Szawelski performs extensively as orchestra, chamber and solo musician. With Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra he gave over 450 concerts up to date. Since 2007 he has been a cello instructor for SAYOWE (Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble) and SEAYCO (Southeast Asian Youth Chamber Orchestra). He collaborates in various chamber ensembles like The Lermontov string Quartet and Contemporary Enclave.
