The week before Labor Day Weekend and somehow I find myself busier than ever. With team members on vacation and a brunt of the work falling on my plate as usual, I’m not going to lie the thought crossed my mind to “Callin Sick.” However, no-days off mentality and the pile of work with deadlines, just wouldn’t allow for that. The reward, you ask? Cracking a few mid-week cold ones. Today we’re turning to Deep Fried Beer’s Callin Sick, which happens to be hopped with 10+ pounds of Mosiac, El Dorado and a use of experimental hop Pink aka ID-158. The latter was from Jackson Farms, whose hails from Boise and is behind Idaho-7. Today’s DIPA, I will admit, isn’t exactly stealing the crown from some of my favorite DFB releases, but I was able to try a few times since the drop as I had extra cans on hand. Melon, strawberry, pineapple, citrus, and almost a peach gummy on the tongue. Piney bitterness fades quickly with a lingering acridity on the tongue that interrupts the overall tasting experience. Your quite parched after a few sips, so don’t call it a thirst quencher by any means. On the thicker side with big hoppy presence. Congratulations to Deep Fried on their own spot! Certainly looking forward to what’s next.

Lately, I been understanding that I can only really worry about what’s in my control. Trying to let everything else go, honestly. Whether it’s work related, a friend’s actions, or even people that don’t know how to drive. With that mindset does come some consequences. Sometimes it’s best to just not dwell. I guess it’s true what they say, “You’re Only Human After-All.” That might be true but “I Used To Consider The Consequences,” as well. Those two terms are tied to our double spotlight from Burial today. First up, we’ll take a look at the latter, which was brewed in collaboration with Other Half. I Used To Consider The Consequences is a rebrew of their collaboration dating back to 2020. This Double Dry Hopped offering features Citra and Cashmere followed up with Motueka and Citra Cryo. The result was a true murky hop-juice with flavors swirling of tropical punch and zesty citrus. Next up we have You’re Only Human After-All another DDH treatment featuring El Dorado, Motueka, Mosaic and a bit of Cascade hops. Tangy Lemon and lime meets fresh cut pineapple and orange juice. Dank, sweet and a solid mouthfeel. Burial hazies are always something I need in stock. Make sure you get yourself some!

Today I spent a bit of time combing through the local vinyl shop for some original pressings. Lucky for me I found some obvious gems. I’m a bit all over the place when it comes to music. My vinyl collection crosses genres and it’s not the usual suspects. It’s kind of like my beer fridge. When I first got into craft seriously, one of the first breweries I traded for was Foam Brewers. The Burlington, Vermont brewery still holds a special place in my heart. Recently I came across their Wipeout Beat which was brewed in memory of with artwork by . This TIPA was dry hopped with Nelson, Riwaka, Sultana and Bru-1 hops. It’s a blend of tropical fruit and white wine flavors. It also has this honey lemon binding flavor sandwiched between pineapple and grape flavors. Smooth, creamy, and zilch traces of booziness. This was a solid offering to help kick off this weekend!

Yesterday, we hit up Other Half for their double-header collaboration with Fidens. The HDHC treatment for Broccoli’s Axe was definitely a nice touch and a reason alone to make the trip! OH’s HDHC editions are always top notch and we’ve enjoyed plenty of them. Recently we saw the Brooklyn, Brewery, drop HDHC Special Reserve editions of Broccoli, Cheddar, and Cabbage. First up, HDHC Cabbage Special Reserve was definitely my favorite of the three. OH subbed in Nectaron in place of Vic Secret to go along with Mosaic, Mosaic Cryo, Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo and Motueka hops. A full on hit of grapefruit and deep citrus to go along with papaya and pineapple on the tastebuds with a dryness finishing with a moderate piney presence on the tail end. HDHC Cheddar Special Reserve saw a swap out of Wai-iti and Kohatu for NZH102(aka Superdelic), Cashmerec and Cashmere Cryo to go along with Ekuanot, Ekuanot Cryo, Citra and Citra Cryo. A nice tropical citrus blend of cantaloupe, orange, lime, and pineapple. Crisp, clean, little to any bitterness. Lastly, HDHC Broccoli Special Reserve has a swap in of Citra and Citra Cryo for Cascade to go along with Mosaic, Mosaic Cryo, Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo and Hallertau Blanc. Definitely my second favorite of the drop with Orange, Mango, Lemon, Lime, and Honeydew with a resinous finish. Each were smooth and delicious in their own right. Which was your favorite? 🥬 or 🧀 or 🥦?

We’re all asked to make leaps of faith while betting on ourselves. Some choose to play it safe other choose to take chances. Like anything in life there needs to be balance, chances don’t need to be blind but calculated opportunities can pay off. Life itself is a blend of chances and outcomes. Many times we label instances as pure luck, while negating the fact that sometimes you can make your own luck. Geometry of Chance is said to be the study of probabilities and outcomes within the realms of dice and card games, some even go as far to present cases behind the credence of lottery winning numbers. In the craft world Geometry of Chance is a nice Double IPA brewed by Monkish. This Double Dry Hopped DIPA features the snake eyes tandem of Citra and Enigma hops. Super soft mouthfeel almost pillowy, with a true citrus presence marked by some traces of pears and berries. It may not be your favorite Monkish drop of the year but I certainly think this one might have been overlooked a bit. Roll the dice on something different is all I’m saying. “He deals the cards to find the answer. The sacred geometry of chance. The hidden law of a probable outcome. The numbers lead a dance.”

Fresh off of their success with The Spell Of The Sorcerer’s Skull back in November, North Park and Brujos have joined forces again. This time around the southwest and northwest connection resulted in a lesser ABV than its previous counterpart. Sons Of Northern Dankness is a Triple Dry Hopped Double IPA brewed with Citra, Simcoe, Galaxy, and Nelson hops. In true liquid spells fashion this concoction delivered on many levels. Noticeably aromatic with pure tropical notes immediately detected. Extremely juicy with a blender of flavors like tangy strawberry, tantalizing passionfruit, fresh squeezed citrus and murky dank white wine. Medium bodied, creamy, nice hoppiness, grainy mouthfeel, dry finish, and mild sweetness throughout. Along with Sons Of Northern Dankness there was also a stout counterpart, Into The Endless, which also dropped. Looking forward to seeing how that one turned out because anytime these two collaborate you know it’s going to be special!

For a long time, running was an outlet for me. Somewhere I could escape and silence the noise. Find a good trail or corse and just separate myself from everything for a bit. Yesterday, the unfortunate news broke of my college disbanding their athletic department. A true gut punch but an instant rush of memories to my days on the team. For the first time in a while I missed that silence while running a trail and just unplugging for a bit. Ironically, today’s spotlight features Timber Ales’ Surrounded By Silence. This beer was as easy as a morning run with morning dew and a rising sun. Dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops. Smooth, hoppy, and citrusy, reminiscent of juicy grapefruit. Quite refreshing balanced with a nice level of dankness. This is a perfect IPA to crack after a busy Spring day. Maybe this is a sign to head back to the trail even if it meant just to surround myself with some silence.

Twenty years ago today I started my first day of high school. As if I needed another example of how old I am getting. While it’s been 12 years since I finished college, high school just feels like another lifetime ago. Looking back we all had our own “coming-of-age” story. Those four years were all about forging friendships and standing out, while also somehow fitting in. We all just seemed to be trying to break from the binds of our adolescence years. I probably should have tried harder in school, while taking fewer study breaks. AIM, MySpace, music and of course television always found a way to sway me from hitting the books. Throw in a snack and a history assignment was just that, HISTORY! Today’s spotlight is a nod to those years of uncertainty, while growing up and finding your way. Study Break is an Imperial Milk Stout brewed with caramel malts, lactose, cacao nibs and peanuts. Incase you need to study that ingredient list, this is big Snickers energy! As they say “You’re not yourself when you’re hungry.” Aromas were exactly what you would expect and hope for with an honest preview. Flavor wise it’s roasted peanut butter and sweet chocolate flavors coming through with a malty creamy finish. Full-bodied, thick, smooth, slight touch of booziness early into the tasting experience. Canned stouts can be tricky this was worth a break from work. Cheers! 🍺 🥜 🍫 🤤

How much can you accomplish in two years? I couldn’t Imagine launching a business in the current climate. Fiden’s opened its doors in 2019, a pretty mind-blowing fact considering the amount of buzz surrounding them in the craft world. However, this was no overnight success story by any means. In fact, Steve, Tim, and Michael have been putting in serious work with their team to get to this point. It’s no surprise the brewery’s name means, bold, confidence, and courage in Latin. Three qualities you need to succeed in any business, let alone one over the last 20 months. This morning they dropped their 2nd anniversary releases and we’ll be trying to get our hands on those for sure! Fidens brings it with each release though, whether it’s a collab or general release you know there is quality in each can. A great example is Fate’s Axe, a collaboration between the Albany brewery and their neighbors up Interstate 87, Bound By Fate Brewing. This Double IPA, is brewed with Excelsior, Citra and Galaxy hops. Excelsior, native to New York State really stole the show here and was amplified by its hop supporting cast. Full on tropical aromas and flavors, with the sweetness up front and moderate bitterness on the backend. Signature Fiden’s creaminess is on display. Looking forward to getting our hands on more of these hazy releases!

Today we have a double review... of the same beer? Yup, that’s right! Released mid-summer, Tripping Animals teamed up with Equilibrium Brewing up in Middletown, NY for a marshmallow packed Triple IPA exclusively featuring Australian hops. With these hops (Galaxy and Enigma), the name was derived from Pete of EQ’s “Sweetness Roos” kicks. And if you know anything about EQ lately, marshmallow is ideally a hop in their minds. Lucky to taste both versions, I actually enjoyed EQ’s version better, as I feel that it had a stronger marshmallow presence. I know some think adjuncts in IPAs aren’t real beer, which is why some may like TA’s version slightly better due to its bitterness, but you knew what you were buying here. I’m a sucker for marshmallow in any style of beer, so this was a top summer 2020 one for me, as ABV is fully hidden in both versions.

Happy Freaky Friday y’all! Just like last week, we have another classic, where Other Half used a brewery’s recipe to make their own. This one has a twist though. Today we have Fort Point, Trillium’s classic and crushable Pale Ale, but two versions... the original Double Dry Hopped and the special OH High Destiny Hop Charge treatment, since Trillium, to date, is the only collaborator to get this hop treatment done. For all those who don’t know, Fort Point is the location where Trillium first opened. These were both amazing! Other Half nailed this variation, but the classic DDH recipe still beats out the HDHC version. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

What’s up Draft Room family? SB here! Just wanted to let you all know, I’ll be on ’s LIVE Hoppy Hour tonight at 7:30pm discussing how I got into this craft beer scene, why we started this account, and just BS’n with some good people. Be sure to give them a follow and ask us tons of questions. Oh now onto this beer...

LIFE AND FATE IV (8% ABV Experimental Double IPA brewed w/ Australian hops) by - Root + Branch has been one of my favorite breweries ever since I saw them on draft at a Hudson Valley tap takeover at Blind Tiger in downtown Manhattan. They’ve usually have been hard to get, but lately I’ve been lucky enough to try the last few can releases. The fourth installment of Life & Fate doesn’t disappoint and I cannot wait to scoop their new sour IPA and try my first stout from them this month. Hopefully their taproom resumes construction and we can all hang in Long Island soon!
