Have you ever lost a favorite piece of jewelry?
I have, and I was crushed.

Back in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, my parents lived in Boulder, Colorado. My Dad drove my mother and me to Taos, New Mexico, for the day because we wanted to do some shopping there. We went to every store around the square looking at jewelry (of course) to find the perfect piece. I don’t recall what my mother got, but I bought the biggest Navajo-made sterling silver and turquoise ring I could afford.

I cherished that ring, and wore it often, especially after moving to Texas where turquoise and silver reign. Well, last year, somewhere on a road trip to Tennessee, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, the ring was lost. I had everyone we stayed with check around, but the ring was nowhere to be found. I was heartbroken, not so much because I cherished the ring, but for the cherished memory of a lovely day with my parents, who are deceased now.

I told my husband he needed to take me to Taos so I could buy another ring. Of course, I could have bought a new one here in Texas, but it wouldn’t mean anything to me. So he took me to Taos, and I bought a beautiful Navajo-made sterling silver and turquoise ring. So now, every time I wear the new ring, I think about my Mom and Dad, and that special day over 50 years ago.
