A Musical Tribute
Bureau Before and After

A while back my friend Sam asked me to paint a dresser for him that his roommate was getting rid of and replace what was left of the drawer pulls with musical note k***s. First I had to find if k***s in the shape of musical notes actually existed and I'm happy to say they do because I didn't feel like trying to figure out how to make them myself! Then I cleaned, repaired, sanded and painted the bureau. I used my all time favorite Lamp Black Milk paint by General Finishes because its the deepest truest black paint I've found and it dries super smooth. I decided the k***s looked lost on the large drawer fronts so I added some artwork. Sam comes from a long line of Irish musicians and band leaders, I think four generations or so. His dad, Sammy Sr., played in and lead many bands in his lifetime and is infamous in Limerick for not only his talent as a musician but for his work with youth bands. Sam's grandfather, Paddy Benson had a dance band in which Sammy Sr. played for many years. Like father like son, Sam and his dad shared a common love for Frank Sinatra and his music. Sam plays the trumpet and his dad played the sax (amongst other instruments) and his signature hat was a fedora as was Sinatra's. When I painted the top of the bureau, I did so to highlight their passion for music and for the unique relationship they shared together. The front of the bureau honors his grandfathers dance band as does the vintage microphone on one end of the bureau. The other end is in tribute to his dad especially but also to the many Bensons who were both talented musicians as well as band leaders. I just delivered it to Sam...I hope he likes it!

Trash to Treasure
Display Unit

When my neighbors picked up an old hope chest off the street on trash day in Salem and offered it to me, I have to admit I hesitated because I swore I would not accept any more homeless pieces of furniture until I refinished what I had waiting in the queue. I don't have the space to store excess pieces and I get overwhelmed by the clutter. But then I got to thinking that it would be perfect to upcycle into a much needed display unit for my vendors booth at the Canal Street Antique Mall in Lawrence. Knowing that someone put their time, energy and craftsmanship into making a piece of furniture, there is always a part of me that feels horrible when I deconstruct it, regardless of the fact that I am saving it from the trash and giving it a new life and purpose. This piece was so dried out that the old square handmade nails popped out with no effort at all. The build was easy just a little time consuming and I am happy to say I am pleased with the way it turned out. I used as much of the wood from the original chest as I could and saved the rest for any updates I may need to make to the unit in the future. Farmhouse Cabinet - Before and After

A friend of mine was doing a clean out and came across this pine ironing board cabinet and offered it to me. Immediately I knew I was going to upcycle and transform it with a farmhouse twist. First I removed the ironing board and sanded down the entire cabinet with 80 grit sandpaper and then filled in the crack on the top with wood putty. I prepped the body with a shellac based primer to hide the knots in the wood and then using Rustoleum chalk paint, I applied one coat of light grey followed by two coats of linen white. For the top I used a dark brown interior latex paint by Behr. Distressing it came next and I started with the edges and then moved onto the body of the cabinet. I only wanted a hint of the grey undercoat to peek through so I sanded by hand instead of using my electric sander. For some additional farmhouse style I used recycled pallet wood to make a new back for the cabinet. Finally, I sealed the body with Rustoleum clear matte topcoat that they make specifically for their chalk paint and for an aged worn look for the top, I used a brown antiquing wax. I staged the cabinet as a linen closet but it could be used anywhere you need a little extra storage. It's for sale at my vendors booth #1111 on the 2nd floor of the Canal Street Antique Mall, 181 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA

TAKE 2
Bar Cart Redo - Before and After

Recently I built this bar cart but never liked the design of the shot bottle display cabinet. Swipe through to the last photo to see what the cart looked like before the I revamped it. I needed to get the cart out of my work space, so I brought it to my vendors booth and secretly hoped no one would buy it until I came up with a better solution to store the shot bottles and glasses. It finally occurred to me that I could make a flight tray for the glasses and a box made from reclaimed wood and metal pipe for the bottles. Making the flight tray was fun. I drilled holes in a 2x2 and prayed I had used the right size drill bit because I didn't have the glasses on hand when I made it. Luck was on my side as the glasses fit perfectly into the holes I had drilled! I removed the cabinet and then added the new accessories and am at long last happy with the finished product. I now speaks to my sense of design and the box and flight tray can be put away on the cart's lower shelves when not in use. It's for sale at my vendors booth #1111 on the 2nd floor of the Canal Street Antique Mall, 181 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA.

PERFECT PAIRING

Recently I refinished and upholstered a garden chair for my neighbor Viviain and soon thereafter upholstered a seat for another neighbor of mine, Karen. The two share a common porch and they decided to up the curb appeal by using the same fabric to cover the seat cushions in their respective areas. I think their idea worked and the porch feels unified yet expresses each of their individual personalities without being too matchy matchy. Most importantly, everything looks great and they are happy with the results.

New Design - Rustic Pallet Wall Bar No.6

This latest bar design in my pallet wall bar collection features a storage cabinet, a wine glass rack, chair springs, metal pipes and various other metal parts and pieces to hold and display glassware and wine/liquor bottles. As with the entire collection of pallet bars, I used reclaimed pallet wood to create a sense of rustic charm. In the past when I have deconstructed a pallet I would typically discard the wood blocks between the top and bottom layers of the pallet and then always feel guilty because it seemed like such a waste to toss out good wood but I could never think of what to do with them. This time I was determined to find a use and as I was pondering this dilemma, turning them over and over in my hands, suddenly it dawned on me that they would make great shelves for the larger bottles. I love the look and now can't stop thinking of creative ways to repurpose the blocks, so count on seeing them in my future designs! This bar includes mounting hardware, a mason jar shaker, a toothpick holder, a wine bottle opener, wine glasses, tumblers and shot glasses and is for sale at my vendors booth #1111 on the 2nd floor of the Canal Street Antique Mall, 181 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA, come on by and check it out!

Custom Built Farmhouse Table
For Sale

This farmhouse table is a marriage of legs from an old kitchen table, a top from a vintage coffee table and new pine boards for the skirt. Neither of the original pieces of furniture inspired me to refinish them as they were, so I salvaged pieces from each and came up with this design. Once I figured out what I wanted to create, I built the skirt, sanded everything down and then prepped it all with Block Out Primer by Insl-X. Next I applied two coats of Rustoleum White Chalk Paint and lightly distressed the edges with 80 grit sandpaper. Lastly I sealed it with two coats of Rustoleum Matte Finish topcoat and somewhere along the way I assembled it all together LOL. I staged it as a desk but it could be used just about anywhere. I can see uses for it in a craft room, a kitchen, a living room, honestly the possibilities are endless! I wish I could have kept it for myself but alas, sadly I have no room for it. It's for sale at my vendors booth #1111 on the 2nd floor of the Canal Street Antique Mall,181 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA

DOOR K**B ORGANIZING RACK

I have an affinity for old vintage doors and their hardware. One of my favorite ways to repurpose the k***s is to make coat racks with them. Of course you can hang a lot more than coats from them as you can see from the second photo where my client used hers to organize jewelry and other personal items.

SITTING PRETTY

My neighbors and friends picked up four of these matching metal patio chairs off the sidewalk last spring and gifted them amongst the neighborhood. We each had different ideas about redoing our own individual chairs. The chair in the photo is my neighbor Vivian's and is the first of the four to be cleaned up and refurbished. I began by scrubbing it to remove all the mildew, loose paint and rust, then applied a coat of primer followed by 3 coats of Rustoleum white enamel paint. Getting into all the scroll metal work with a small artist brush proved to be tedious and time consuming but at the same time it was rather relaxing because it made me stop and slow down. Next I made a template for the seat and traced it onto 1/2" plywood. Then I broke out my jigsaw and cut out the seat. Then it was time to upholster the seat. A good upholstery job takes time if it's going to be done right and I have a pet peeve about wrinkles on the edges and messy corners, so I took my time. Lastly, I attached the seat to the frame and voila, it's now looking lovely and inviting on Vivian's front porch!

NEW LADDER STYLES

Ladders are a big seller at my vendors booth and I've started to create some new design styles to serve different purposes. Ladders are great when you need organization and storage but don't have room In your closets or or don't have the floor space for furniture. I make floor ladders as well as ladders that can be hung on the back of doors or on walls. Of the two in the photo, one is the new pantry ladder and the other is the bath ladder featuring 3 hooks for hanging accessories, clothing etc.. You can check them out at my booth #1111 on the 2nd floor of the Canal Street Antique Mall, 181 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA 01915
