It’s been a little while..
a long, slow build, to muster the energy to climb back into this ‘public space’— which has felt just beyond my capacity these past few years.

There has been grief. And life. And change. And some significant unexpected turns. Life off the screen has kept moving, but trying to put myself as an artist out ‘into the world’ (which is, the internet... ??) has felt increasingly distant and daunting. The longer I was absent, the more it felt like I had to come back with something big— Strategic! Exciting! Launched!

But there is no plan. No launch. There is nothing big. There is just me, having spent the last two days back in my artist-shoes, and feeling the good kind of tired for the first time in a long time.

I have to be clear that this is a self-indulgent creative outlet for me every year. She would have been happy with a face painted triangle on her nose and dollar store ears. But I am hopeful she’ll still be happy when I’m done 😅

As we’re making slow progress on packing up for our move, I am continually back and forth on whether to try and use up the dyestuffs I’ve been stashing away over the years, or try to bring them with us. I’m trying to shake the habit of always saving things for an undetermined special project or time that never seems to come…

So last night I used up two little stashed jars of dried flowers (dahlias and scabiosas), and a handful of the black beans I had hidden away, to dye a few wooden beads and silkworm cocoons, with delightful results. I especially love the black knight scabiosa (the brighter purple) and am hoping the few seeds I scattered into the garden this year continue to grow for another chance at using it before we move! Deep red dahlias produced the lovely honey orange, and black beans created the muted cool purple. Do you have a favourite?

Something a little different from me.
When I found out this year was a leap year, I knew I wanted to do something a little special. I always think of it as a day that exists outside of normal life, and it makes me feel like I can step back out of the mundane dreary days of winter for a small breath of wonder and magic. So, I convinced these two to get the ol’ band back together, for one night of music and warmth on what might otherwise slip by as just another bleak winter day.

All that to say, we’re playing a house concert Thursday, February 29th, in our little town of Saint Stephen. Feel free to DM me for the address or more info. Hope to see you there ✨

You can catch a glimpse of my ‘Aprilis’ bird’s nest piece in these photos, and a couple of my other pieces are hanging on the wall, one just out of view! Pop into Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre to see them and incredible work from other local artists. I was there opening night but can’t wait to go again to get a better look at all the gorgeous work on display.
