We turned our 9" Beadsmith Snowflake Wire Form into a glow-in-the-dark spider web using 22-gauge Soft Craft Wire and size 8 glow-in-the-dark PRECIOSA seed beads! 🎃

One of our favorites, Alyssa Songoi (), is a Native beading artist of Paiute, Shoshone, and Hopi descent. Her work is simply amazing, and we’ve been privileged to share some of it from time to time.

On the powwow circuit, you’ll come across dozens of beautifully beaded crowns worn by young women of all ages competing for the opportunity to represent their tribes, communities, schools, or powwows for the following year.

Those selected often play a prominent role in Grand Entries, travel to other powwows, speak at community events, visit schools, participate in cultural functions, and serve as role models and ambassadors for younger people.

I’m not sure exactly when the tradition of the beaded crown began, but it has certainly become part of the cultural fabric of the modern powwow. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than this guy can weigh in and teach us a little more about its history.

Wonderful work, Alyssa. These pieces are absolutely beautiful.
