Teresa Kiplinger Jewelry As a career graphic designer and lifelong poet, I am an interdisciplinary artist drawn to the craft of art jewelry for its power to communicate.

I am an interdisciplinary artist mixing original verse, illustration, precious metals, and old-world metalsmithing techniques to create art jewelry that explores contemporary themes of isolation, anxiety, and existential dread. In my work, I combine original verse, precious metals, and old-world goldsmithing techniques to express modern experiences of isolation, grief, and existential dread.

A little look at some of the work that goes into handmade jewelry. When the tedium starts to get to me, I take a deep breath and remind myself what a tremendous privilege it is that I get to do this work. And then, each swipe of the file is a gift.

The first two rings of my upcoming Arrivals & Departures collection are almost finished. Each piece features a hand painted vitreous enameled scene with hand engraved original micro stories on the bezels and traditional 1800s-inspired decorative borders.

One piece depicts an astronaut detached and drifting in space. The inscription reads, “Range increasing. No longer responding to commands. Houston out.” The band is decorated with a hand engraved beaded border reminiscent of Victorian era design.

The other piece depicts an individual lifted skyward in a beam of light whose origins are unknown. The inscription reads, “After a moment’s consternation, she stepped into the light.”

I’ll have at least 15 pieces in this collection— it’s the first body of work created in my new studio and have had such fun working on it! Look back in my feed for more.

What’s your reason for making? I recently had a conversation with Joy on Artsy Types that one of the biggest reasons for me is the almost addicting sense of awe — when I’m in a deep flow state for hours, and suddenly a piece appears as if a stranger made it. It’s like magic, and it keeps me coming back to my bench again and again for more. What keeps you coming back?
