Teresa Kiplinger Jewelry As a career graphic designer and lifelong poet, I am an interdisciplinary artist drawn to the craft of art jewelry for its power to communicate.

I am an interdisciplinary artist mixing original verse, illustration, precious metals, and old-world metalsmithing techniques to create art jewelry that explores contemporary themes of isolation, anxiety, and existential dread. Looking back on my first chase and repousse cuff bracelet from 2022. I took up the technique during the covid lockdowns and it proved to be the perfect remedy for the intense anxiety of those strange days. The ancient technique uses heat, steel punches, and a hammer to sculpt dimension into metal by working it in a malleable material called “pitch”. The hours of focussed tap-tap-tapping quieted my nerves, and I went on to sculpt four more large cuff bracelets through the remainder of the pandemic; each one took over 200 hours to complete. 🖤 Thank you for being here.

In the late 1970s, my rural third grade class took a field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art. From the moment I stepped into the air and awe there, I knew I wanted to grow up to be an artist; I can directly trace many pathways and aspects of my life to the experience I had that day at CMA.

Five decades later, one of my jewelry pieces has been selected for inclusion in the Museum’s juried exhibition, ‘Lake Effect: Artists From Cleveland Now’. The show celebrates the museum’s 110 years of inspiring the community.

As I prepare to leave Cleveland after spending most of my adult life living and working here, it’s bittersweet— but I can’t think of a more delightful way to say goodbye. 🖤

The Lake Effect exhibition will be on view July 9 through December 6 at The Transformer Station.

As I await my move, I am experiencing an unfamiliar idleness in my hands. So, I’m looking back on photos of the maelstrom of creation from the last few years. Now in an empty and echoing space, looking back on these images of my studio in mid-collection is kind of like having an out of body experience; I have no recollection of these moments, as they are all-consuming and then disappear like waking from a dream.
