Next pair of chaps are in progress. With my horse show schedule this past month I’ve had to slow down on my work in the shop but it’s nice to get out of the heat and spend some time in the air conditioning pounding hide.

For me, this is the hardest part of the process. A blank sheet of paper that I have to fill with flowers and scrolls before I can get to work carving. Some days the inspiration is there and the pattern just appears on the page, but most days it is a grind of sketch and erase and redraw till all the space is filled and the lines all flow. Art is discipline and work, it is sitting down and doing the thing even when you have no inspiration or feeling of excitement for the piece. If you sit around and wait for the muse to magically take hold fill you with creativity and ideas you will wait forever. Sit down, pick up your tools, and do something, the inspiration will come later.

This is a note to myself as I have been puttering around the shop this morning, repeatedly getting up from this blank pattern that I can’t seem to start on. Maybe some people are blessed with endless creativity and artistic expression but I am not one of them. Today it’s particularly difficult and I just need to put the pencil to paper and start drawing something.
