A Simple Guide to Dowsing

Dowsing is an old-school intuitive practice used to track down hidden things. Things like water veins under a property, lost keys, or even answers to tough personal questions. It bridges your subconscious mind with physical tools like rods or pendulums to give you a visible signal.

The basic gear
• Dowsing rods: Grab two L-shaped metal wires or wooden sticks. You can even make them out of old wire coat hangers.

• A pendulum: Any weighted object, like a crystal or a heavy ring, hanging from a string or thin chain.

• A quiet space: You need a spot where you can focus without getting distracted.

How to start
Prep your environment
Find a calm space. Focus your breathing and settle your mind. If you are stressed or distracted, that physical tension can block the subtle movements of your tools.

Hold your tools correctly
• For rods: Hold one in each hand by the short end of the "L." Keep your grip loose enough that they can swing freely, but firm enough that they don't fall out of your hands.

• For pendulum: Hold the top of the chain between your thumb and forefinger, letting the weight dangle completely still.

Set your intention
Figure out exactly what you want to know before you start. Clear, specific questions help gain clear answers. Vague thinking tends to lead to confusing tool movements.

Calibrate for "Yes" and "No"
Before hunting, you have to establish your baseline. If you're using a pendulum, hold it still and say, "Show me a YES." Watch the direction it swings (maybe it goes in a circle or left-to-right). Then ask it, "Show me a NO," and watch for the change. If you're using rods, look for them to either cross over each other or swing wide apart.

Start your search
Now you're ready. Walk slowly across the area you're searching, keeping your eyes on your tools. If you're using a pendulum over a map, move it slowly across the paper. Watch for the specific "Yes" you established in the previous step.

Log and double-check
Keep a notebook handy to sketch out what happened. If you were looking for a physical object, go ahead and dig or search the spot. Testing your accuracy in the real world is the best way to build your confidence and refine your skills.

Pro-Tips
Check your grip: White-knuckling the tools is the number one reason they won't move. Loosen up.

Trust your first instinct: Dowsing is all about gut reactions. If you start overthinking the movement of the tool, you'll accidentally force it to move with your conscious mind.
