Let's talk about plants! Social media allows you to hide, clean up, and style away the reality. My Pothos have been reptted. Some of them are pouting because in spite of them being in dirt for 5+ years, they think they are aquatic. (And their size for their age tells you I am hard af on them). Note the bare vines. I'm slowly growing leaves back with keiki paste, but it's slow going. I don't want to focus all their growth on leaves when they really need better roots.

Also, please observe the absolute carnage of what it looks like when I tend to my collection. (Outside is the wind's fault and not mine!)

Self-portrait I painted when I was in high school. I thought that it had been lost to time and possibly sitting in a Goodwill somewhere in Iowa or Memphis. But it was found last week. This one I'll keep. Now we'll see if I will eventually find the dress somewhere. Fingers crossed.

Most of the land we have is a gully and 2 exceedinly steep hills. Almost a right angle in spots. It took me 2 weeks to go from not wanting to get too close to the drop to deciding I needed to get to the bottom. I did go sliding and cussing.

A lot needs to be done to heal this land. There's a pond that is unhealthy and is barely there anymore. There's the woods that need a prescribed burn. So much invasive honeysuckle. A cache of garbage from the 50s, which is cool but also troubling.

And even more to do when it comes to getting what open space I have set up to grow things in soggy clay soil.

There is a nursery called Helmi's Gardens that I drive by nearly every week on my way to therapy for PTSD. On the hardest days, or when I need to bribe myself, I stop to "look" at plants before an errand or going home. I'm "just looking" is what I say to myself while gathering plants into my arms. I look at them at the register, in my car, and multiple times a day at home.

Sometimes, when I have to brush up against my mom's death that day, I go to look at the succulents and hoya, which were my mom's favorite plants. Sometimes I bring something home to grow for her.

Today was hard. Really hard. So I decided plants would help. At the register, Helmi gave me a piece of begonia that had broken off a new plant so I could propagate it. Immediately, my heart was much lighter. Garden and plant people are so generous. And it really is a testament to the difference between shopping local vs big box.

So if you read this, Helmi, thank you for helping turn my day around. It really does mean a lot.

A portrait of mother and children. Apparently when you procrastinate for YEARS on repotting a plant they go up multiple pot sizes. It took me 3 HOURS to get her untangled from the sphagnum moss.

I had a friend who was shocked (and possibly horrified) to know I have shifted into more practical attire since moving back home. Don't worry. I still have more dresses than jeans. Though if I could live in that insulated flannel, I would. The bottom half on the back is ONE GIANT POCKET. The other day I shoved my small purse, my cellphone, and my keys into it to bring boxes inside the house. It also has an inner corner at the hem made for cleaning glasses. I feel like we're not reaching far enough when demanding just pockets in women's clothes. We need to be demanding clothes that can accommodate carrying small wild animals and double as a parachute, because I believe this is possible now. Duluth Trading Co is nearly there.

Also, proof of jeans and white shoes after Labor Day. Serial Mom might murder me, but at least I won't get mistaken for a rich Gilded Age socialite.

ALSO The tile floor in my kitchen was installed by the woman who built our house. She did it all by herself. Which makes me smile.
