What is the difference between rocks, gems and minerals? A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that is formed through geological processes with a specific chemical composition. A rock is an aggregate of minerals and does not need to have a special chemical composition. A gem is a mineral (or occasionally a rock) that has found favor among humans for its attractiveness, value, hardness and/or rarity.
