A Bit of Michigan History: In the late 1800s (around 1870–1885), the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company operated an iron smelting furnace along the shores of Lake Michigan. As iron ore was processed using charcoal and limestone flux, impurities formed a vibrant blue byproduct called slag. This “worthless” waste was dumped into the lake, where over time the waves tumbled and polished it into the beautiful, glassy stones we treasure today. Each Leland Blue piece is a unique relic of Michigan’s industrial past — no two are exactly alike!
