I was going to write a Tuesday Truth only to find out that it’s actually Wednesday.

Here’s the long and the short of it- I massively struggle to show up in this space on “the grid.” I can show up to stories all day long, but leaving any kind of a bread crumb trail of a life here otherwise sometimes feels like too much work, and I know... but this is “my work.” Yeah, that’s not lost on me.

I wrote a very very very long post, but here I am again, choosing to pull back. To delete it. I don’t know what it is anymore... I am deeply grateful for what this space has given me, what it continues to give me... thank you for hanging in there with me and my business and for putting so much trust in it as I struggle to give these cubes time out of my very precious life. I think that’s all it is, I treasure my time so much, it’s hard to give pieces of it away anymore than I feel like I already do and have. Xx love you all!

I’ve been working on my joy. On my response when the roller coaster is pointing downward and I know I’ll have that zero gravity gut feeling that usually leaves me feeling scrambled. Feeling like it’s happening a lot more lately? Yeah, me too. But here’s what’s been working for me, and in a way that has been shockingly good...

1. The minute I start to feel that yucky dark feeling and I’m looking ebb right in the eyes, I shoot off a text or make a phone call. I make it something super positive. I’ll make a list of good things and send them off to the beard. I’ll bring up an old and happy memory and send it off to a friend with, “remember that time....” And it works. I instantly start smiling or laughing or they’ll shoot back another joyous thing or extension of that happy memory. Sometimes I just say, “Hey, miss your face, we should plan something,” or “wanna grab a bagel and coffee?” Your people are your lifelines and everyone wants to feel good. It’s funny how easy it is to bounce back when you have someone in your corner to remind you that you have a great life.

Never underestimate the power of a clean and organized studio.

Jewelers are kind of known for working surrounded by disaster. Benches full of tools and scrap and dust and dirt and everything close by… so many tiny freaking tools. One year I cleaned up my act and now I will die on the cleanliness and organization hill. Once everything has a designated spot with no exceptions, cleaning up after your day is so easy and fast and rewarding. Just do it already. You’ll thank me later.

Not everything has to be precious to be precious, you know?

This return to silver inlaid river rocks has me under some kind of spell right now. There’s something so satisfying about being able to manipulate something in a way that changes its status from non-precious to precious. From simple to intriguing. From common to special.

The first time I ever made this work, it made me feel like I had mined something that only I could mine.. and I loved that about it. River rocks have such a beautiful nature. Smooth, time shaped, and quiet, yet so simply beautiful. There’s an intrinsic magic that not many other materials can claim.

Some days, it’s so meditative, that I don’t realize that I’ve drifted. I love to set with a hammer. Not the old l school way, not the way that you’re “supposed” to, carefully, with a steel stake and a hammer, but with just a hammer. Straight to the bezel. A way that most people would probably tell you to absolutely not do. But if you saw how a hammer and I can work, how perfectly those strikes can land, I’d like to imagine you wouldn’t even consider the risk.

I didn’t realize I had drifted until I started to cry. I kept setting.

My Oma, my German grandmother, was an artist. She drew and painted and created. She sewed, and crocheted. She dressed impeccably her whole life. Always wearing handmade, art jewelry from her travels. Always matching. Always with her hair done. Growing up, she always had a project for us, always took us to art stores and sculpture gardens and museums. She always talked about being an artist, about trying to sell her paintings, about having them in local shops in Danzig (Germany at the time, now Poland). You could hear the longing in her voice, the one that always wished it had become more.

I’ve been having so much fun trying to create the perfect little bedside (or wherever you like to put your most special goodies) jewelry dishes. Some have been total flops, some are on the right path… I want simple, subtle, beautiful. I’ve got a few new ideas to try out, we aren’t totally there yet, but it still makes me happy.
And jars, oh so many jars and textures and ideas. There have been a few nights that the cogs won’t stop spinning and I’m up all night with the oh! What if’s!
Have some fun ceramic ideas? I love little functional things and how when they’re handmade your space becomes so much more homey and special- got me with your best thoughts! Maybe I’ll test some out!

Winter barely has a breath this year and if it’s not going to get its act together, then I would please, just like it to be garden season and thank you. I know, it’s just us, sorry to the rest of you facing the after effects of that last horrendous storm.

Last year the beard and I spent a glorious amount of time swimming in the pacific, attempting to heal ourselves with saltwater and sea turtles and all the fresh fruit and poke we could afford. These beauties came home with me from that trip. I found (while obviously looking like a disney mermaid)*, cut, sanded and polished them in hopes to share them with you all here. That’s the special thing about the natural world and art, isn’t it? How it can connect us... remind us of other people and places and trips and dreams and sunshine.

*proof and the beards perspective of my mermaid-ness on the last slide. Sound on. How has Weeki Watchee not hired me yet?
