Destination Reroute

Destination Reroute To inspire adventure... Through exploring and experiences, adventuring and adversity, you learn things about yourself. This is the Destination Reroute.

You stumble upon life’s gems, only to reveal what you still must discover. These teach you to accept the current circumstances and adapt to overcome them. Through this process, whether in a day hike, an overnight bikepacking ride or a week-long excursion in the mountainous backcountry, perspective is developed and understanding is created. You learn that where you thought you wanted to go was not

where you should go. You learn that changed plans don’t mean an altered purpose, though perhaps your purpose evolves too. You discover how your weaknesses can compliment your strengths. That the pattern of life is ever changing and never stagnant. And how one shouldn’t be afraid of what is ahead, but rather press on anticipating the intersections of trail we call “life”. This is the product of travel and adventure.

Mid-week adventure rides 🔥❄️👀

⏰ Every Tuesday, rolling @ 7 pm for some backyard shenanigans.

We keep it fun, chill and mix it up – There's something for everyone!

Last night we rolled from Sherman Park in Victor out Old Jackson Highway and up the Centennial Trail to Trail Creek Campground.

From the paved path, Happy Hour looked questionable, but we were pleasantly surprised to find tacky conditions and no mud or slime! 🤙🏻🤘🏻

Even through the snow, it wasn't too bad – maybe a little walking to keep it interesting.

If you'd like to stay informed or make a suggestion about community rides and events, comment 👇🏻 or send a DM 💌 and I'll send you an invite to the WhatsApp group. Everyone is welcome! 🌈✨

See ya next Tuesday! ✌🏻🚲

Got the commuter rolling again 🙏🏻 just in time for some nice dry gravel and quiet paved back roads.

The wind died down quite a bit today compared to what it's been... It was nice to NOT have 50 mph gusts today.

Rode north and then west of town out to and along the river and looped into Driggs. A nice 34 mile, low-key mixed surface ride from home. 👌🏻

South Valley Trails in Victor, Idaho

A pretty slow start to our snowpack so far this winter. Usually we're well into grooming these trails by now (we can be riding groomed singletrack as early as late October).

Snuck in a good ride on some interesting snow conditions before the rain came back into the valley. Started up Nemos, "breaking trail" over a 1-2" crust layer, with an icy base—a wee sketch. Bud & Lous are the way.

Other trails had nothing but a skiff to bare dirt to nicely rider-packed (where you roll over it enough that it becomes faster, smoother & more predictable, although I rarely use that word about fatbiking – nothing predictable about it.

But those conditions are long gone and we're in another rain cycle... C'mon snow! We need you! 🙏🏻

Feel free to reach out if you're ever looking for fatbike ride recommendations in the Tetons or surrounding region.

As the dirt season nears the end and a storm bringing one of the first snowfalls in the Tetons, we snagged a prime weather window, perfectly tacky dirt, beautiful weather and golden leaves to top it all off.

Breaking in the new Golden Monkey before it's put away for the winter!

Hey friends! By now, you're probably familiar with the Great Rift Dirt Tour route in the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve that I’ve been pouring my heart into for the last few years.

And while I set up registration and the info page a few months back, I haven't shared about it much lately, but here's what's going on this year for the Rally on the Rift!

Dates: June 9–15, 2025
And this year, there are TWO parts. One for the bikepackers who can commit to 5 days of remote riding, and one for those who can't make that time or are simply not interested.

Part one: The Grand Depart on the Great Rift Dirt Tour route, which I have been stewarding since 2022. The ride is self-supported and requires more advanced navigation and bikepacking experience. This is a choose-your-own-pace style ride (NOT a race), although we often end up all camping in many of the same spots along the way. The Great Rift Dirt Tour, a 285-mile loop that winds through Craters of the Moon National Monument, lava flows, sagebrush basins, and big open skies. It’s 86% unpaved, remote, and absolutely stunning.

Part two: No bikepacking experience required!
COME BE A PART OF THE IDAHO BIKEPACKING COMMUNITY!
If you’d like to participate without the commitment of a 5-day epic ride, this is for you!

On Saturday, June 14th, welcome in the riders after they have spent 5 days bikepacking the wild landscape of the Great Rift and Craters of the Moon! Then hang out and listen to the stories from the trail with good food and cold beverages. We’ll car camp at Kings Bowl (space is limited, so PLEASE RSVP here: https://forms.gle/Qj9Q8wDrx5Z5n2Ab6

On Sunday, June 15th, we’ll do a chill group ride from Kings Bowl around 9 or 10 AM.

What to expect: minimal elevation gain, but 100% unpaved and rough terrain (think 4x4 roads). Around 10 or so miles, no more than 15. After the ride, head home at your leisure!

This is a free, grassroots-style event I created for those who love solitude & adventure, but also crave community and connection.

For more information, sign up for the Rally on the Rift Grand Depart (if that’s your thing) here: https://forms.gle/7AaSxjHA4mYRCQ3n9 OR the Great Rift Campout and Fun Ride here: https://forms.gle/Qj9Q8wDrx5Z5n2Ab6

Spots are limited to 30 entries per sign-up form.

The route, photos, and more Info & Registration can also be found on my website: https://destinationreroute.com/rally-on-the-rift

If you have specific questions not covered in the info above, feel free to reach out [email protected]

Hope to see you out there! ✌️🚴‍♂️✨⛺️

What was an experience you had where uncertainty and stepping outside of your comfort zone led to the most serendipitous moments that you couldn't have dreamed of?

"Imagine catching a ride with a random stranger, being dropped off in a desert town with just your bike and some gear, then heading out on solely your human power across the red dirt as the sun sets. It may sound appealing to many, as it was to me, but instead, I was instantly overwhelmed."

A new Substack from Project Adventure Recall landed in your inboxes this morning. You can find it through a link in the bio too, or by heading to destinationreroute.substack.com

This story was originally published in 2018 on , which is unfortunately no more.

In an effort to preserve the story, I've reposted a revised edition of it to the Substack.

This experience was a big one for me. It took my adventuring to the next level and gave me the courage to take on my first long tour of 11 days the following year.

Getting in a car with a stranger wasn't so scary. It was the uncertainty of where I'd go when coming back into town in-between trips, having little financial ability to buy hotel rooms.

Amazingly, a wonderful friendship also blossomed out of this experience!

Hope you enjoy it!
