Although this is a pretty common machine, with around 120,000 made in 1902, this particular one is of note. This one was brought over from Ireland by my client's Great Grandmother. The best story we have been able to piece together is that they probably left the cabinet in Ireland and brought the machine with them as they immigrated. At some point it was motorized with an after market motor, probably around the 1920-30’s, as that was becoming common around then, possibly later.
This was a restoration project, not a rebuild, nor just a cleaning and adjustment. First we addressed the grime that had accumulated, in the back of the closet, since the 1980’s, then the corrosion from moisture. We were able to save the bobbin winding guide, but not all of the finish around the serial number. There was also some crackled finish that we could only polish up, but I was pleased with the end result. My client was over the moon and acquired a cabinet to put her machine in.
At the same time we helped her Mom’s 1950’s Necchi get back into shape. I forgot to take photos, but it was fun putting two heirlooms back into service.
