Can someone tell me which fashion law requires your necklace and earrings to match???
I'll wait. ππ
Because it sure seems like some of us are still following jewelry rules that should have been retired about the same time as those shoulder pads that were the size of aircraft carriers.
I'd like to propose three candidates for immediate dismissal.
1οΈβ£ MATCHY-MATCHY MANDATE
Who decided your necklace, earrings, and bracelet (or ring) all have to be part of a matching set?
There of course is nothing inherently WRONG with matching jewelry. Not at all. BUT there's also no requirement that your accessories must look like they came out of the same box. π
π‘ TRY THIS INSTEAD:
If you're wearing a bold statement necklace, try smaller, simpler earrings. Or pair a delicate necklace with a more dramatic pair of earrings.
They can complement each other without competing with each other like a pair of identical twins.
2οΈβ£ MIXED-METAL MELTDOWN
Gold AND silver?
TOGETHER??? π±
Somewhere, a woman who learned her fashion rules in 1987 - and has followed them loyally ever since - just gasped as she clutched her pearls in horror at the thought. π
Someone throw some water on her and grab some smelling salts.
I happen to love, Love, LOVE mixing up all the metals. Yellow gold, rose gold, rhodium, hematite ... I don't discriminate.
π‘ TRY THIS INSTEAD:
Start with two necklaces in different metal finishes. Repeat one of those finishes in your earrings or bracelet to make the combination look intentional.
Or grab a piece that already incorporates multiple metals and let it do the heavy lifting.
π₯ But one of my FAVORITE ways to do this? With all of the removable pendants, charms, and drops out there ... switch those baddies out for one in another metal!!!
I do this ALL the time - especially with hoops! And you've just expanded your jewelry options without spending a penny! π₯
3οΈβ£ NECKLINE NEGOTIATIONS
You put on a gorgeous necklace, look in the mirror ... and realize the pendant is sitting DIRECTLY on the neckline of your shirt. π¬π€¦ββοΈ
Or worse yet, half of it has gone in to the witness protection program and is hiding underneath your neckline.
Well, that's helpful. π
π‘ TRY THIS INSTEAD:
Experiment with different chain lengths (again - removable pendants!). Let the necklace sit clearly above your neckline or extend below it, rather than competing with the edge of your shirt. Personally, it drives me nuts messing with it all day trying to make sure it's showing. And if you know me, you know I ain't got the patience for that nonsense.
But a simple necklace extender can make a surprising - and inexpensive - difference.
Or, you can hook two necklaces together in kind of a "pulley" arrangement that lets you adjust the length of both. (Don't know what I'm talking about? Comment PULLEY and I'll show ya!)
And there you have it.
Three jewelry rules we can either amend, repeal, or sentence to death. π
Because getting dressed should not require a committee meeting or a quorum.
Which one(s) have you been following?
Or do you have another ridiculous jewelry rule you'd like to sentence? π€£
