I always get a little extra excited when someone orders one of my older Art Deco pieces. While these weren’t fully handcrafted from scratch, they came from one of my favorite creative phases, upcycling vintage jewelry and giving beautiful old pieces a new life. It is what lead me into making stained glass jewelry.

This makes me think about how much I miss digging through vintage finds, reimagining them, and turning them into something wearable again. Maybe I should bring a little of that back. What do you think?

Hiding in plain sight and taking this Austin series to Well, Color Me Happy!

Standing at 804 Congress Avenue, the Bosche-Hogg Building dates back to 1897, when Congress Avenue was the heart of Austin’s commercial district. The site is even associated with what has been described as the first steam laundry west of the Mississippi in the late 1890s.

One of my favorite details is at the very top of the façade: two dates, 1897 and 1906, marking different chapters in the building’s early history. Its incredible projecting bay windows, brickwork and stone detailing still give a glimpse of what downtown Austin looked like around the turn of the century.

More than 125 years later, it remains standing on Congress Avenue, surrounded by Austin’s modern skyline and is officially recognized by the City of Austin as the historic Bosche Building.

A little piece of Texas history that connects two places close to my heart. Thomas McKinney was prominent merchant and co-founder of Galveston, TX before establishing this homestead near Austin in the 1840s. The site also preserves the stories of the enslaved people whose labor helped build and sustain it. Seeing the connection to Galveston makes it especially meaningful. Galveston Island will always hold a big piece of my heart. ❤️
