How do radio-controlled watches actually set themselves?

On the left is my Citizen AT9070-51L with the H820 movement. On the right is my JDM Seiko SBTM293 with the 7B75.

Different brands. Different movements. Yet those seconds hands are ticking together almost perfectly.

The answer is WWVB—a 60 kHz time signal broadcast from Fort Collins, Colorado. Each watch independently receives the same time information and uses it to correct itself.

They’re not talking to each other. They’re just listening to the same clock.

Pretty incredible technology hiding inside two otherwise normal-looking watches.

From My Collection | Vintage Bulova

Tonight my wife and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary, and this vintage Bulova got the call for dinner. 🍷⌚

This one is a 1964 Bulova Date King, a Swiss-made, manual-wind mechanical watch. It has a silver vertically textured dial, applied Arabic numerals and markers, a framed date window at 3 o’clock, and that unmistakable mid-century case and dial design.

More than 60 years later, you still wind it by hand, set the time, strap it on, and let the mechanics do the rest. No battery. No electronics. Just a tiny mechanical movement doing the same job it was built to do in 1964.

Mine certainly shows its age. The dial has developed some character, the case has lived a life, and I paired it with a red leather strap that gives the old watch a completely different personality.

It felt like the right watch for an anniversary dinner.

And when the w**e cork hit the table, obviously the watch was going on it. 😂🍷

Watches are meant to collect stories. Tonight this one picked up another.

Some watches are made to be babied. This isn’t one of them.

7:00 AM to 6:15 PM on the paintball field today. Cold. Wind. Rain. Mud. Getting shot at all day. And this G-Shock just kept doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

This one is a little more special to me because it was given to me. And I think the best way to appreciate a watch like this is to actually use it for what it was built for.

Days like today are exactly why I love G-Shocks. Put it on, forget about it, and go. No worrying about the weather, banging it into something, or whether it can handle what you’re doing.

When I look down, I just expect it to be there — wet, dirty, beat up…and still working.

A watch with a story, being used exactly the way it should be.

What’s on the Bench — S. Coifman Limited Edition | Part 2

A few days ago, this S. Coifman hit the bench with a shattered mineral crystal, glass sitting directly on the dial, and a dead battery.

We left off with everything safely disassembled and one plan:

Don’t just replace the crystal. Upgrade it.

Well… the parts arrived. 😎

The new battery went in, the dial got one final inspection and cleaning, and the original mineral crystal was replaced with a 37mm sapphire crystal using the original crystal gasket.

And I have to admit — seeing that blue dial behind clean glass again was pretty satisfying. 💙

But this repair ended up being a milestone for Miner Watch Works, too:

This was my first crystal replacement.

Lots learned along the way, and I couldn’t have asked for a better result on the first one.

🇺🇸 Labor Day — If You Can’t Find It, Make It.

There are thousands upon thousands of watches out there.

But sometimes you still can’t find exactly what you want.

So… make it. 😂

That’s one of the things I love about the watch modding community. Pick the case. Pick the dial. Choose the hands, movement, strap and all the little details that turn a pile of parts into your watch.

This Seiko GMT mod is a perfect example. Automatic GMT movement, compass-style dial, 24-hour bezel, exhibition caseback and a combination of parts that makes it something a little different from anything sitting in a display case.

Somebody had to put in the labor to build it, so I’m declaring that enough of a connection for a Labor Day post. 😂

If you can’t find the watch you want, make the watch you want.

What’s on the Bench — S. Coifman Limited Edition

Well, this one showed up having a rough day. 😬

This S. Coifman Limited Edition came across the bench with a badly shattered mineral crystal and a dead battery. With glass sitting directly on the dial, the first job was getting everything apart without creating any more damage.

Movement out. Dial carefully cleared of glass. Broken crystal removed. Dead battery removed.

Thankfully, the dial and hands appear to have made it through remarkably well considering how much broken glass was sitting on top of them.

Now we wait on parts.

Rather than simply replacing the original mineral crystal, we’re taking the opportunity to upgrade it to sapphire while it’s apart. A fresh battery is on the way as well.

For now, everything is safely disassembled and waiting on the bench.

Sometimes the easiest way to completely change a watch is the strap.

My Tissot V8 Automatic Chronograph has been wearing a brown leather deployant strap, but I never felt like it quite matched the personality of the watch.

So, time for a change.

Off came the leather and on went a Crown & Buckle Chevron Adjustable in Black/Coyote. The thin coyote stripe plays perfectly with the warm dial, while the black gives the watch a much sportier look that feels more appropriate for a chronograph.

Same watch. No modifications. Completely different personality.

One of my favorite parts of watches is how something as simple as a strap change can completely alter the way a watch looks and wears.

Sometimes a watch comes by that you just have to stop and photograph. ⌚️📸

A friend’s wife wearing this Rolex Oyster Perpetual with its light green “Pistachio” dial, and there was no chance I was letting it leave without borrowing it for a few pictures.

No repair. No service. Nothing needed — just a chance to appreciate a really cool watch.

The Oyster Perpetual is Rolex stripped down to the essentials: three hands, no date, automatic movement, Oyster case and bracelet. Simple, clean and incredibly versatile. Then you throw this dial into the mix and suddenly a very traditional watch has a ton of personality.

I spend a lot of time photographing watches I’ve worked on. Every once in a while, it’s fun to photograph one simply because I like watches.

The watch spotting continues…

This time it’s an Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial Master Chronometer in steel and gold.

The Seamaster Diver 300M has been an Omega staple since 1993, and this modern version is instantly recognizable by its ceramic wave-pattern dial, skeletonized hands, scalloped diving bezel and helium escape valve at 10 o’clock.

Flip it over and you get a view of Omega’s Caliber 8800 through the exhibition caseback — a METAS-certified Master Chronometer movement with a 55-hour power reserve and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss.

And despite all the luxury finishing, this is still a legitimate dive watch rated to 300 meters.

The black ceramic, stainless steel and gold combination looks incredible in person.

One of my favorite parts of getting deeper into watches has been noticing what other people are wearing. There are some seriously cool watches hiding in plain sight.

You just have to look at people’s wrists. 👀

Last watch from tonight’s unexpected watch spotting: Hublot Classic Fusion.

Hublot is a brand that tends to get some strong opinions from watch enthusiasts, but getting one in your hands is always more interesting than judging it from pictures.

The Classic Fusion takes Hublot’s recognizable design language and tones it down — exposed H-shaped bezel screws, integrated strap, a clean three-hand dial and an exhibition caseback showing off the automatic movement.

It also ties directly into the idea behind the Hublot name: “The Art of Fusion.” Hublot built its identity around combining materials and design elements that traditionally weren’t paired together in luxury watches.

And that sunburst dial under the right light? 👌
