I won’t pretend learning to be alone came easy to me..
because it didn’t.
For a long time, I thought I always needed someone there.
A friend.
A partner.
A lover.
Someone to fill the silence and make me feel less alone.
Truth is, I wasn’t choosing people because I wanted them beside me..
I was choosing them because I was afraid to sit with myself.
That was hard to admit.
But once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.
I realized I had been depending on other people to make me feel okay.
And darling..that was never their job.
So I did the one thing I was most afraid of.
I stopped reaching for someone else.
I sat with myself.
My thoughts.
My feelings.
The quiet.
At first, I hated it.
There were nights I wanted to pick up the phone just so I wouldn’t feel alone.
But I didn’t.
I stayed.
And little by little, something changed.
The silence stopped feeling empty.
My own company stopped feeling uncomfortable.
Being alone stopped feeling like something was missing.
I started enjoying my own space.
My own peace.
My own life.
And that changed the way I loved people too.
Now, the people beside me are there because I choose them.
Not because I need someone to fill a space.
Not because I’m afraid of being alone.
Because I genuinely want them there.
That difference means everything.
I learned I can take myself out.
Sit in silence.
Travel alone.
Spend a night by myself and still feel completely okay.
I don’t need someone else to make me whole anymore.
I already am.
So if I reach for your hand and ask you to walk beside me..
understand what that means.
I’m not asking because I need saving.
I’m not asking because I’m lonely.
I’m asking because out of all the places you could be..
I want you beside me.
And darling..there is something beautiful about being loved by someone who knows they can stand alone..
but still chooses to stand with you.
Happiness doesn’t begin with another person anymore.
It begins with me.
And anyone I love now gets to add to it..
not become responsible for it.
