💍 What’s the BEST wire for making rings and wrapping gemstones?

Lots of people ask me what kind of wire I recommend, especially if they want jewelry that doesn’t tarnish easily without spending too much! 🤍

Here’s my honest advice:

✨ Gold-filled wire — beautiful for gold jewelry and wire-wrapped rings.

🤍 Sterling silver wire — perfect for silver designs and gemstone wrapping.

💰 On a budget? Stainless steel wire is another option with excellent corrosion resistance.

📏 Which gauge should you buy?
• 18 gauge — stronger rings and structural designs
• 20 gauge — a versatile starting point for many ring designs
• 22 gauge — smaller wraps and delicate details
• 24 gauge — wrapping pearls, beads, and finer details

Remember, no wire is completely tarnish-proof, and the best gauge depends on your project!

Let’s talk about crimping tools 👀✨

If you’re making beaded necklaces, you’ve probably noticed there isn’t just one crimping tool.

And honestly… the size of your crimp bead matters just as much as the tool you’re using.

Here’s how I think about it:

✨ Micro Crimper — my go-to when I’m working with very small crimp tubes and delicate jewelry. It gives me more control when I want a small, neat finish.

✨ Standard Crimping Pliers — great for everyday necklace making and slightly larger crimp beads or tubes. This is the one I’d recommend for beginners who are making a variety of beaded necklaces.

✨ Different Crimp Sizes — tiny crimps are perfect for dainty designs, while larger crimps give you more room when you’re working with thicker beading wire or heavier beads.

One thing I learned from making jewelry: don’t just grab any crimping tool because it looks similar. Your crimp, your wire, and your tool should work together. 🤍

A good crimp should hold securely and look clean when you finish your necklace.

If you’re new to making beaded necklaces, start with a standard crimping plier and learn how to make a clean crimp. Then you can add a micro crimper when you start working with more delicate pieces.
