Every component of my art is mai ke kai... from the sea. At one time it all washed up on to the shore in Kailua and Waimanalo. Currently displayed , this tapestry is my vision of the ocean. Sadly, collecting the plastic is the quickest aspect of creating these pieces. When looking at it up close, you will see many recognizable items. It is my hope that this will be a reminder to all of us that the ocean is where much of our plastic ends up. •

It’s Plastic Free July and I am so excited to be partnering with seven wonderful Kailua Town retailers to help spread awareness with my art. Each location has a tapestry that I created hanging in their windows. These tapestries were all made with marine debris that I collected off oahu beaches. Over the next few weeks I will be featuring shops on my social media accounts. Lauren Roth, is an artist that I have been following since moving to Hawaii. Her use of color is an inspiration to me. I love her rainbow and gorgeous Àina paintings. A rainbow tapestry was a perfect choice for her shop. Check out and all of the retailers who I’m teaming up with.

I recently watched “The Smog of the Sea”, a truly entertaining documentary film about the morbid subject of plastic pollution in the ocean. It follows a group of scientists, surfers and ocean enthusiasts as they cruise across the Bermuda Triangle, experiencing and researching, the smog of the sea. (I watched it on Vimeo) The tapestry you see here was created from “sea smog” collected off the shorelines of Kailua. 📸 •

It is so interesting how the amount of plastic on Kailua beaches can change so drastically. Up until this week, there hasn’t been as much as usual. Today, doing a beach walk I found 2 plastic army mean and a headless animal of some kind. I also collected 56 plastic bottle caps, in a 30 minute walk. 📸 •
