Dark Side of the Wood

Dark Side of the Wood Turning trash into treasure from reclaimed, recycled and repurposed wood. Guitar building and repair.

Collectible wooden gifts - handmade and harvested from locally sourced lumber; albeit diseased, dead or storm fell trees. Dark Side of the Wood started out as a jewellery company making plugs from scrap guitar lumber in Maryland, 2011, while luthier Matthew Barrett was working in a production line as a finish hall worker for Paul Reed Smith. Upon acquiring new tools and techniques as he traveled

the country, the art produced has expanded ten fold. In late 2017, Matt relocated back to Bucks County, PA in a small suburb of Langhorne, to care for his family. Now, the company sells wood locally sourced from diseased, dying, or naturally fell trees for customers to make their own art projects. The handmade items produced can be purchased at Richland Antiques and Collectibles in Quakertown, PA. The goal of the company is to provide sustainable lumber practices for the local community to support.

How I am converting a tremolo to a hardtail.

I made a block from poplar and used epoxy to fill any gaps after the successful tight test fit you see here.

After a little black paint, I assembled the bridge to see how it looks. My client approved, so now we move onto the next step: wiring for triple humbuckers 🤘🎸

Here is the first custom plug order in my new studio!

Allow me to introduce the original design that coined the beginnings of Dark Side of the Wood.

15 years ago, I started to pursue my woodturning hobby while working for a guitar manufacturer. I would make plugs from scraps during the milling process on the shop drill press before purchasing my first woodworking tool: a lathe.

After years of refinement, they are still one of my favorite things to make, possibly because of the process itself.

Natural maple wearable surfaces are taped off during production for a clean finish line before using water based stains - only on the fronts and backs. CA glue is applied in layers before leveling and buffing. After the tape is removed, the roundover is blended smooth, and the chatoyancy of the curly maple really comes to life (as seen in the video).

Be sure to check out the last photo if these are not your style, as I do craft using other safe woods to adorn your body with.

Visit the New Hope studio F-Sun 12-5 or visit local pop ups to place your personalized order.
