At some point in his career, Claude Monet had essentially stopped painting the world and started painting a single pond. It would occupy him, almost exclusively, for the rest of his life.

The pond itself was Monet's own creation. After buying his house and garden at Giverny in 1890, he diverted a local river to feed a new water garden, over the objections of neighbors who suspected the wealthy Parisian's "aquatic plants" were more self-indulgence than science. Monet all but admitted as much: he told local authorities the garden was purely for visual pleasure and future painting motifs. Yet even he didn't immediately grasp what he'd built.

Real strength is the ability to face truth without running from it. A strong person may dislike lies because lies insult his intelligence, his character, and his respect for reality. He does not want comfort built on deception.

But a weak person is often offended by truth because truth exposes what he is trying to hide. It touches his ego, his excuses, his habits, and his insecurities. Instead of learning from it, he fights against it.

Truth is not always gentle. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it breaks our pride. Sometimes it forces us to see the version of ourselves we have been avoiding. But that pain can become growth if we are brave enough to accept it.

A mature person does not hate the one who tells the truth. He listens, reflects, and improves.
