“Growing up, I often felt like I did not belong in my community as one of the few Asians in a predominantly white high school, as the first in my family to attend college and enter the corporate world, and as an immigrant to this country. Education and opportunity were what drew my parents to the United States. They worked tirelessly to give my sister and I the best chance to achieve our dreams. However, as a first generation college student, I always had a sense of imposter syndrome, as if I had ended up there by mistake or utter luck. While these thoughts stemming from my childhood environment have shaped who I am, in many ways for the better, I need to unlearn them in order to become the person who I am meant (and want) to be.”

“I was raised by teachers—my dad teaches middle school and high school math, and my mom teaches college business. Although they had high expectations when it came to school growing up, they always encouraged me to do what I love. They used to ask: ‘Why waste your life being mediocre at a job you hate, when you can be the best at a job you love?’ This stuck with me from an early age, and I knew that I needed to be in a creative field. I followed that intuition and now I get to do what I love every day—most of the time it doesn’t even feel like work… and that is the best kind.”
