Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

In Canada and the United States, Indigenous women make up roughly 4% of the population but account for 50% of all trafficking victims. Many trafficking victims are Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Relatives.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

- Support frontline Indigenous-led efforts that understand the cultural nuances and colonial complexities that contribute to the high rates of trafficking victims from Indigenous backgrounds
- Challenge the status quo of racism and misogyny
- Support initiatives to protect Indigenous Women + Girls and that overlap in the connection to MMIWG2S+
- Support initiatives for safe and affordable housing that decrease vulnerability to human trafficking by providing people with basic human needs
- Challenge corrupt policing policies and government apathy by holding colonial systems accountable for their violence
- Practice consent in ALL things
- Get involved when there are Amber Alerts and Missing Person Files involving Indigenous People in your community
- Get connected with and financially support mutual aid requests and Indigenous-led community initiatives that decrease vulnerability by connecting people with cultural practices
- Share this information to increase awareness + amplify Indigenous voices on the frontlines
