More of the post I promised showing my build process. 4ft Snake Whip with shot loaded tapered core. Progressive binding to get a good spring, always checking to make sure the thong is firm at the base and then relaxed enough for a great roll out. I do a lot of rolling to compress and smooth out the foundation. That hand drawn diagram is a basis, not the full amount of binding, but you get the idea.

I'm making a 4 foot snake whip and decided to share my build process. It begins with an actual tapered shot bag. Thin leather encased in Gaffer tape. It's cotton based and will always ensure a good foundation.
Yes, I understand that a tube of BB's can work as a shot load, but when you spend years learning how whips are made and perform the taper is key to a great foundation.
I use #12 lead shot. Recently learned I can replace that with steel. Thank you to my fellow whip maker for that information.

I always put 3 inches of 1/4 inch steel in my handle foundation to add weight and keep it from wiggling when throwing.

This is pre binding. I bind every layer of all my whips to build a foundation for great spring.

I'm closing up my shop to move and I am wondering if I should open it up again. After over 10 years of doing this I can't compete with horrible whip makers selling s**t items for low prices.

I've spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours perfecting my craft and it doesn't seem to matter to most people.

Being one of the best at what I do hasn't really worked out with so many wannabes polluting the market with s**t merchandise.

Yup, I couldn't wait to say that.
Be ashamed if you're one of those beginner whip makers selling things that look like a snake ate a rabbit.

Something I don't normally do, a fused English Eye. A customer asked for a fall that would accommodate tying on or looping it through with a Lark's head. The hole is made with a Fid so not to cut any of the strands. Then delicately melted to keep it's shape.
