There’s something about opals…

Flashes of electric blue, neon green, and fiery orange that seem almost impossible. Looking into an opal feels like peering into a faraway galaxy. There’s something wonderfully mysterious about how so much extraordinary color can exist inside such a tiny stone.

Opals have always been my favorite gemstone, and I’m excited to share four beautiful examples from my collection, each with its own remarkable colors and patterns.

All four are available for custom jewelry commissions. If one catches your eye, I’d love to hear from you! Send me a DM or email [email protected] to inquire.

A custom project I just finished.

My client had a pair of diamond earrings that had been given to her. They held meaning, but they weren’t really her style and she rarely wore them.

Rather than leave the diamonds sitting unworn, we used the center stone and several of the smaller diamonds to create a custom version of the Arc Charm, something that felt much more like her.

This is one of the things I enjoy most about working with someone’s existing jewelry. You don’t necessarily have to choose between holding onto something meaningful and wearing something that feels like you. Sometimes the stones just need a new setting and a new point of view.

A closer look at the Orla Pendant. I was drawn to each of these stones for something a little different: the rich saturation of London blue topaz, the vibrancy of carnelian, and the soft luminosity of blue chalcedony. Each is custom cut here in New York to let the color take center stage.

Introducing the Orla Pendant.

The Orla Pendant took shape slowly, through sketches, references, and early experiments with volume and proportion. I kept returning to the same idea, pushing the curves outward, pulling them back, watching how even the smallest shift could change the whole silhouette.

Slowly, the shape began to take on a life of its own. The gold swells outward into soft, fluted curves before drawing back in again, wrapping around the stone. There’s a fullness to the form, but also a softness to the silhouette.

There’s a satisfying weight to it, and a sense of volume that you can feel as much as see when you wear it.

In this week’s newsletter, I talked about spending a week at New Approach School for Jewelers learning more about stone setting, and some of the things I brought home with me.

Including, apparently, a new use for Jolly Ranchers.

Before a group of stones can be set, you first have to figure out exactly where each one will sit. Our instructor, Blaine, showed us a surprisingly simple trick for doing this: lick the candy to get a little of its stickiness onto the surface of the ring, and the tiny stones will stay put just enough that you can move them around and get the spacing right.

For something that requires so much precision, I loved that one of the most useful little tricks involved a piece of candy.

Sometimes the right tool is a graver. Sometimes it’s apparently a Jolly Rancher.

One day, three designers, and so many of you who came out for Objects of Adornment. It was exciting to finally put faces to names, meet so many of you in person, and share new work alongside Rebel Jewelry and Goldstories | Fine jewelry

Thank you to everyone who came through and made it feel like a real celebration of independent jewelry. More to come soon.
