Brown diamonds were once overlooked. Today, their warm ch*****ne, cognac and chocolate tones are attracting fresh attention. đŸ’ŽđŸ€Ž

In January 2025, The Wall Street Journal quoted diamond analyst Paul Zimnisky reporting price increases of up to 40% over the previous five years in certain fine brown diamond categories.

The distinction matters: this wasn’t a 40% rise across every brown diamond. Color, undertone, clarity, size and cut all influence value. Two brown diamonds of the same weight can command very different prices.

Ch*****ne, cognac or deep orange-brown: which would you choose?

Before celebrating a new direction in facetless diamonds, perhaps we should acknowledge who was exploring it 24 years ago. 💎

Something interesting is happening in diamonds right now.

For years, the industry chased perfection. Whiter, cleaner, more symmetrical, better proportions. But lately, we’re seeing more people looking in the opposite direction.

Old Mine cuts, antique cushions, open culets, briolettes and other vintage cuts are getting attention again. These stones weren’t cut by computers to make every facet perfectly identical. They can be chunky, slightly irregular, deeper, warmer — and that’s exactly what gives them character.

I noticed this especially at the Hong Kong show. The interest in vintage shapes was hard to miss, particularly when combined with warmer and brown colors. Stones that dealers might have overlooked a few years ago suddenly had people searching and bidding for them.

And maybe it makes sense. In a market where “perfect” diamonds are everywhere, collectors start looking for the things that are harder to repeat.

Perfection is easy to recognize. Character is harder to find.
