How to Read an Opal.
Every opal arrives with a story written in, and reading one is an art worth learning. Begin with the play of color: the flash itself, how brightly it burns, how far it travels when the light moves. Then the body tone, the backdrop behind the performance. It runs from black to white, and the deeper it sits, the louder the color speaks. Look next at the pattern: some opals scatter their color in pinpoints, some send it in broad rolling sheets, some lay it out in the patchwork collectors circle first. And geography signs its work.
Australia writes in depth, color rising from dark ground. Ethiopia writes in light, crystal-bright and so open it absorbs water. Our own reading ends on a different page: We choose every opal for character over perfection, the flash with a personality, the pattern with a point of view.
