The Misfits' logo is based on the skull of the Crimson Ghost, a character from the 1946 film serial The Crimson Ghost. Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only came across an image of the character while searching for images to silkscreen on t-shirts. The Crimson Ghost first appeared in a flyer promoting a gig at Max's Kansas City on March 28, 1979. Then in June of the same year it was featured on the cover of the Misfits single Horror Business.

The actual Misfits Crimson Ghost logo is not an exact replica of any still shot of the original film, but rather an original rendering by Danzig's artistic interpretation of the Ghost with his own unique detailing and imaging.

More than four decades later, the Crimson Ghost is still haunting the music world. It’s more than just a piece of band merch; it’s a symbol that has seeped into mainstream culture. Whether it’s worn by an old-school punk rocker or a modern-day fashion enthusiast, the Misfits Crimson Ghost design has held strong as a representation of individuality and counterculture.
