Fellow wood lovers help me out! A neighbor gifted me some small wood scraps but had no ideas what species anything he had was, so I just made this spoon out of this beautiful piece of mystery wood and have no idea what it is? Why do you think it might be? It’s very very hard.

This is an overhead shot of a Myrtle, swivel lidded box with turquoise inlays throughout that I made a few weeks back. Love the shape and color contrast in the myrtle wood and how it blends with the turquoise.
I’m getting super excited to make many many more bowls, boxes and dishes because guess what,.. I just got a lathe!! I’ve never used one before and can’t wait to get it all setup! Now to learn how to use it! More to follow on that one, my first lesson is on Saturday! Get ready people, there’s about to be a bowl explosion over here! Ha.

This morning was so fun. I taught spoon carving to the loveliest family in their home, for their adult children and friends who are all home for the holidays. Everyone’s spoons turned out so beautifully. Totally uniquely matched to each carver. My next class is coming up super soon! I say this every year but I really love playing the role of the holiday elf for customers and making the gifts they want for their loved ones. This beautiful all purpose, carving blade was handled with ancient alligator juniper wood (which was hand collected by the recipients partner) and brought to me to be used for this wonderful project. Inlaid with turquoise and ohh so pretty! The rest of the branch is pictured above.
Hope it provides many years of carving fun!
