In a faraway place (Edinboro, PA), a loooong time ago (1989), I was honored to receive the Congressional Art Award from Congressman Tom Ridge — who would go on to become Governor of Pennsylvania and the first Secretary of Homeland Security.
My drawing hung in the halls of Congress for a year, and Congressman Ridge invited my parents and me to Washington for the unveiling of the exhibit and a private tour of the halls of Congress. Needless to say, for a kid from Edinboro, this was a VERY big deal.
And then there was the unexpected highlight: meeting Robert Downey Jr. AND Sarah Jessica Parker, who were dating at the time and were there in support of the arts. (Yes, I looked it up. They really were dating in 1989. 😉)
Fast forward 37 years…
Ken almost accidentally burned these documents today. 😳 Thankfully, he stopped and thought they might be something I’d want to hang on to.
He was right.
Finding them again gave me pause. And a moment to remember the kid I was, the people who believed in me, and just how much one little drawing could mean.
So, thank you to my mom and dad for always supporting and encouraging me — and to my art teacher, Buck Snodgrass, for believing in me and encouraging my love of art.
