Emilie Shapiro Jewelry Design Working mainly in recycled brass and gold, Emilie also uses gemstones for their transcendent qualities | www.emilieshapiro.com

Emilie Shapiro’s work is inspired by natural elements and heavily driven by experimentation and process. She incorporates natural, rough gemstones celebrating beauty in imperfections. Emilie uses the ancient craft of lost wax casting which dates back to the Egyptians, wherin she carves sculptural pieces into hard wax and casts them into metal. For a primitive yet modern feel, Emilie casts gemstone

s in place so they are embedded in the metal to represent a marriage of materials. Emilie uses sustainable business practices by avoiding harsh chemicals in her studio, using recycled metals and packaging materials, and working with vendors who share the same ethos. All jewelry is handmade in Emilie’s studio in New York City. Emilie grew up on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, where water has always been her constant and her inspiration. She comes from a long line of creative entrepreneurs, inventors, and free spirits who have encouraged her to explore many different mediums throughout her artistic life. Emilie teaches jewelry workshops at the 92Y, Brooklyn Museum and other institutions throughout the tri-state area. Emilie Shapiro is the author of How to Create Your Own Jewelry Line (2016) and Creative Wax Carving (2017) published by Sterling Publishing, Inc.

Casting in place is an experimental technique where the gemstones are placed directly into the wax and then the entire piece is cast in metal. It’s one of my favorite skills and I’m teaching it in my new online Cast in Place Settings Class! ✨

All you need for this is wax, stones, and some simple hand tools – you can send your wax to a professional casting house to have it cast in metal.

In the class you’ll learn:
• How the process works.
• What type of gemstones to use.
• Tips for successful castings.
• How to make an eternity band.
• How to make a solitaire ring.
• How to send your wax models to a professional caster.
• My list of recommended casters.
