A trip with Bill to Australia sparked the inspiration for Kabuki Kachina of Southern Stars. ✨

We were told an Aboriginal story of Australia’s rare black cockatoos. According to the story, the birds with red under-tail feathers start fires, while those with white tail feathers don’t. The moment I heard it, I could hardly wait to bring that story to life in my art.

Perfect for this piece is an extraordinary specimen of Australian opalized fossilized wood, once a living tree. Her other sleeve is fabricated and engraved eucalyptus leaves in green gold, flames of red & 24-karat gold and 24kt branches with ruby eucalyptus buttons.

I’m designing her beadwork now, and she will be available soon! See her in person @ ARTAZAN Pasadena

A little peek at my workbench in all its very real glory. 😂

Some of these tools I’ve had since I first started metalsmithing. Many came secondhand or thirdhand through my dad, who loved tools and seemed to know how to do just about anything. Others have beautiful handles Bill made for me, and a few are just strange little things I’ve picked up along the way and somehow can’t live without.

There are hammers, saws, files, burnishers, diamond bits, polishing wheels, sandpaper, engravers and, perhaps most importantly, my thumbnail. Truly one of my best tools.

I use many of these things every single day. They aren’t fancy or new, but they’ve been part of my life and my work for so long that I can’t really imagine my bench without them. I especially love that so many came to me through my dad. Every one has a history, and that makes using them feel a little more special.

Tools really are wonderful things. ❤️
