The rope hits you when you’re wrong.
Not exactly a gym slogan—but it might be the best leadership lesson I’ve learned in years.
Rope Flow taught me more about feedback, blind spots, and getting out of my own way than I expected.
I wrote about it—and why every leader needs a feedback loop.

Celebrating 26 years with this amazing woman! When we walked down the aisle 26 years ago we had no idea what lay before us. Blessings and challenges of pastoral ministry. Raising David with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. Raising Matthias—one of the best humans I know in the world. A marriage crisis that took us to the edge and into a new world of intimacy and connection. We are business partners, parent partners, ministry partners and most of all, life partners. I thank the Lord for you Lisa. ❤️

It’s been a while since I posted—David is back in the hospital in Santa Barbara for a bowel obstruction. We brought him down for a GI visit Tuesday and ended up taking him to the ER and he was admitted. It sounds like he’ll be here through the weekend most likely. He’s coming along but it’s slow going. I’m always blown away by the amazing ICU staff here at Cottage. We’ve been worried about David the last couple weeks and we’re so thankful David has the support he needs. We’ve been praying for another friend in an extended hospital stay and have been blown away at what God has been doing in him. We’d love your prayers for David—that we can figure out what’s going on and get him back on track

So happy to say David is home! We got to spend the weekend with both of our boys home. We even got out to see a concert with Matthias and his girlfriend—a nice contrast from 8 days in the ICU. I’ve been trying to find the words to post for a couple of days and have had a hard time knowing what to say. Maybe that says something in itself—my friends have never accused me of saying too little! As a dad I spend so much energy engaging the doctors and staff, representing our family, keeping watch, communicating with family and friends. When we get home, I think I’m worn out in ways I don’t realize. We have seen the Lord watch over our son (both of them really) yet again in profound ways we can only attribute to prayer and the Lord’s healing hand. Thank you for the many prayers and thoughts for our family this past week!

We came in this morning and David looked great—he even got a walk with his favorite PT from our last stay. We made the plan for discharge with the doctor to head home today. Then David’s breathing worsened and we realized David needs at least one more night. I spend a lot of my energy in these stay advocating for David—representing him with staff, helping get him out of bed, go for walks, and to avoid things dragging out. So when we have setbacks like this it hits hard. And I know it doesn’t take much for a minor setback to turn in something worse. We’re eager to get David out of the hospital (I worry about prolonged stays and the possibility of additional infections) and to stop living out of a suitcase. We’re used to having to make these decisions, but there is real strain there. Real disappointment. Today I’ve been working hard to get back into the present moment and trust the Lord with our guy. I think it’s a minor setback and hopefully tomorrow will be the day

David’s improvement continues! He’s off all the heavy meds, switched to a regular cannula and is off the NG tube. We even got some more smiles this morning! He was able to eat some food and we took a couple walks around the ICU! He’s such a little stud! He’s doing so well we’re hoping for home soon! Also happy to say Matthias is doing well down at Biola in the midst of this and has his own prayer group going! So grateful for all the prayers and comments—we truly believe the prayers are helping David and strengthening our family

For the record I’m reading The Hobbit to David in the pic doing the voices (not angry!😂) Update on David—he’s doing pretty well today. They’re bringing down his sedation and oxygen today. Of course that means he’s much more wiggly! We’re going to try to get him out of bed so he can use his body a bit. Slow and steady progress. Thank you so much for all the prayers—they truly matter!
