Thank you so much, , for these new signs at the recycling center! ♻️

I see so much wishcycling in the bins that hopefully this will help people better understand what can and can’t actually be recycled. Contaminated bins can cause entire loads to be thrown away (which is a waste of city money), so small changes like this really do make a difference.

I often get asked if it’s safe to melt plastic at home. My answer is yes, under a few conditions:

1. You know what plastic you’re melting. HDPE and LDPE are generally the safest and easiest. They’re the only types I melt.
2. You work in a well-ventilated area.
3. You use proper protective equipment (gloves, mask/respirator).
4. Never burn it. While it may be hard to reach this point, remember to keep temperatures low. Stay between the melting point and toxic fume threshold.
5. Never melt PVC!
