My dad is a permanent and totally disabled Vietnam veteran. We've been trying for 3 years to get him the handicapped accessible vehicle grant through the VA. He was finally approved in September and after hitting brick wall after brick wall trying to find someone who would even accept the VA grant for a truck, we finally connected with Mobility Works. They had the same trouble and finally just outright purchased a truck to have converted by ATC Mobility for my father. The ATC conversion will have a gull wing door (think Delorean) that will open up, a lift seat will drop to the ground then lift my father into the truck. This conversion was determined to be the best conversion suitable for my father.
The truck is now with ATC getting the accessible conversion done. My dad is likely going to owe upwards of $32k (after the VA chasis grant, the VA equipment grant, a Semper Fi Fund grant that I secured for him) . This is a crazy amount of money for a disabled veteran. We are still.waiting for Semper Fi Fund to determine the final amount that they will grant to him. On top of the monthly payment he will have for the truck, he will also have a very high insurance bill that will have to cover the $132+ thousand dollar truck in the event that it gets into an accident.
I created a gofundme to try to help raise some funds to put towards the purchase of this handicapped accessible truck. If anyone can help, please do. We would be so very grateful. Please share the post!
The black truck in the photos is the actual truck that has already been purchased and is currently with ATC for conversion. The red truck is what the conversion will look like.
