Thought today I would Look at how to tell if something is Silver or gold.

The first step is to use a Magnet to see if it sticks (Gold & Silver do not) If it sticks or pulls to the magnet then It is likely plated.

Step two would be look for markings. On silver the numbers 400, 700, 750, 900, 925 or 999 will be on them or the word Sterling. If from England the royal lions may be the mark.

For Gold your looking for 375, 400,420,585,750,900, and 999 or the 8k, 10k, 14k, 18k, 21k, 21.5k, 22k, and 24k

The last step is done in the shop we use solutions made for each type of gold to figure out the purity of the gold.

With the under karot laws here in the US a piece can be up to 3% under or over the exact percentage. Many items made here in the US are made at the lowest possible percentage. So actually it is 39%, 55%, 72%, 80%, 90%

Dental gold is always 16k Even if it is not marked it might be real so bring it buy and I can check it.
